Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation Raising Funds To Create Howard Peterson Memorial Scholarship
Howard Peterson, an influential leader of the U.S. Ski Association (USSA), passed away in May. As secretary general of USSA in the late 1980s and early 1990s, he advocated for integration of freestyle skiing and snowboarding into the Olympic program. He worked closely with FIS President Marc Hodler to help bring snowboarding into the Olympics in 1998.
He also became heavily involved with the FIS Advertising Matters Committee, using the platform to craft new rules that would help support advertising revenue for athletes. He retired as its co-chair and was recognised by FIS as an honorary committee member in 2012 after serving 20 years.
In honour of Howard Peterson and his lasting memory within Youth Sports and Soldier Hollow Legacy Centre, the Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation is raising funds to create a Howard Peterson Memorial Scholarship at Soldier Hollow Nordic Centre.
“Peterson was always a leader and since his passing, many have been asking, ‘how can we celebrate and honour Howard?’ We plan to create an opportunity in the future for us to gather at Soldier Hollow to both celebrate Howard, and to bring us all together, in a reunion of the people whose lives he touched”, says Luke Bodensteiner, General Manager of the Soldier Hollow Nordic Centre.
”We also want to honour Howard with a scholarship in his name to support youth in the Soldier Hollow program. Of all his life accomplishments, he had the greatest pride when working at Soldier Hollow. It embodied his approach to legacy - ensuring that the spirit of the Olympics was carried on in future generations of youth.“
The Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation is now establishing the Howard Peterson Memorial Scholarship to support young cross-country athletes in the Heber Valley and needs donations to set the programme up. The scholarship will be awarded to youth cross country athletes (age 10-18) on Team Soldier Hollow.
