Three Gould Athletes Named To USST, Godomsky Returns As Director Of Athletics

Gould is thrilled to announce that Snowboardcross (SBX) racers Bri Schnorrbusch ’24, Tyler Hamel ’22, and Nathan Pare ’23 have been named to the U.S. Snowboard Team! Bri and Tyler were named to the SBX Pro Team, while Nate secured a spot on the SBX Development Team.

“This remarkable accomplishment is a testament to their dedication and relentless hard work in their training at Sunday River, high-performance fitness programs, and demanding travel schedules,” says Snowboard Program Director Anna Yoshie Yamada.

The selection of Bri, Tyler, and Nate to the U.S. Snowboard Team speaks volumes about their exceptional skills, the strength of coaching at Gould, and their potential to compete at the highest level. We are immensely proud of them and excited to see what they will achieve as they represent the United States internationally.

Gould Academy is also excited to announce that Mark Godomsky will return to Gould as Director of Athletics effective August 1, 2023. As Director of Athletics, Godomsky will oversee all athletic offerings at Gould, from the school’s premiere on-snow competition program, based primarily out of Sunday River Resort as a winter satellite campus, to the top-tier mountain biking and cycling program, as well as all of Gould’s traditional field, court team sports, and co-curricular activities.
“I am thrilled to be returning home to my roots in Maine,” says Godomsky. “Under new leadership, Gould is an industry leader in on-snow sports. While I’ll be overseeing the athletic program in its entirety, I’m excited to pick up where I left off, implementing my vision for the Competition Program when I was at Gould earlier in my career.”

Godomsky was formerly the director of the Gould Academy Competition Program, a program that features high-level Alpine, Freestyle, Nordic, and Snowboard racing teams, as well as Freeride, Freeski, and Slopestyle disciplines from 2007 until 2015.

In 2016, Godomsky left Gould to become Executive Director of the Aspen Valley Ski & Snowboard Club, an organization whose mission is to provide access to the mountains for over 3,000 children each year, from first-time skiers to Olympians. For the past seven years, Godomsky has restructured the organization from the ground up. In that time, he’s also helped to raise $2.7 million annually to help support young athletes pursuing their passions.

“I proactively reached out to Mark for this position for three reasons: his student-centered focus; his track record of success; and his unparalleled ability to inspire his team and accelerate program growth,” says current Director of Athletics Ben Kamilewicz ’95, who will assume a new role to assist with implementing strategic design within the leadership team at Gould. “He is the absolute right person at the right time. We’re so grateful to have him back in the fold.”

In the relatively short time that Godomsky has been away, Gould has continued to evolve and grow the on-snow program in many ways.

“The leadership at Gould has made an undeniable commitment to On-Snow programs and improvements to team sports and team culture,” says Mark, reflecting on the positive changes at Gould. “The Lieblein Performance Center, the Alera Group Coaches Offices and Surface Lift, and the dedicated strength and conditioning program…all provide athletes and coaches the environment they need to do their best. That’s what the U.S. Ski & Snowboard program witnessed when they designated Gould as a Gold Certified Club last year. That’s what I saw when I came back to visit. I’m excited to continue to grow this strong program for all student-athletes at Gould.”

Before working at Gould, Godomsky has an impressive background, having coached at Carrabassett Valley Academy, Bates College, and 13 years as the Alpine Program Director and assistant football coach at Colby College.

“Historically, Gould Competition Program athletes receive an experience that is unique and second to none. Recent investments in infrastructure and athletic leadership will ensure that this remains true for future generations of Gould students,” says Head of School Tao Smith ’90, P’23, ’28. “Mark is returning to Gould to help strengthen our winter sports programs and to build upon Gould’s signature “whole-student” approach to developing healthy minds, bodies, and spirits. The role that athletics plays in children’s lives is critical to reinforce core values and build growth, maturity, and leadership skills. Mark has a strong vision for the future of our programs. We’re excited to see where his leadership takes us.”
