Sun Valley Resort’s Annual Winter Wonderland Tree Lighting Takes Place This Weekend
Sun Valley Resort is ready for the holiday season with the annual Winter Wonderland festivities and events happening throughout December. From the annual tree lighting ceremony, on tap this weekend, skiing under the stars at Dollar Mountain on New Year’s Eve, the calendar is full of family-friendly activities. This year’s theme in the Sun Valley Village highlights the magical scenes in a snow globe.
First off is the Holiday Storytelling for the Kids in the Sun Valley Lodge Sunroom on Thursday, Dec. 13 from 3:30 pm – 5:30 pm. Presented by The Community Library, children of all ages can hear old and new Christmas classics, as read by the library staff. Admission is free and open to the public. The following day, Warren Miller’s “Face of Winter” is screening at the Sun Valley Opera House at 2:00 pm. Tickets are $5.50 at the door.
For those looking for unique and locally-made gifts, the Open-Air Holiday Market on the Sun Valley Village lawn happens from 11:00 am – 7:00 pm on Saturday, Dec. 15, and 11:00 am – 5:00 pm on Sunday, Dec. 16. Vendors from around the state will have everything from handmade ornaments to roasted nuts. A Christmas wreath sale is also happening during the market hours, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting The Senior Connection.
The Tree Lighting Ceremony in the Sun Valley Village begins at 5:30 pm, featuring Santa, live music and free hot cocoa and cookies. Guests can also see the new Sun Valley Inn archway, once a part of the original Challenger Inn built in 1937. After the tree lighting, guests are invited to come inside to see the recently renovated Sun Valley Inn during a public open house from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm, and enter for a chance to win a free night at the remodeled Inn.
The Winter Wonderland Scavenger Hunt in the Sun Valley Village is happening now – Dec. 31, 2018. Participants take their scavenger hunt cards to the retail shops and look for “Sunny the Bear” doing something at each location, then match the activity to the store. Participants can exchange completed scavenger hunt cards for a prize at the Sun Valley Guest Center. There is no charge to compete, and everyone is a winner if they match everything correctly!
The highly-anticipated opening of the Warm Springs Day Lodge is Saturday, Dec. 15, with the grand reopening celebration on Saturday, Dec. 22 at 11:00 am with a ribbon-cutting, and chocolate chip cookies.
