Stechelberg-Murren - Building The World's Steepest Cable Car

Between Stechelberg and Mürren, the SCHILTHORNBAHN 20XX project is creating the world's steepest cable car. The new aerial tramway will have a maximum gradient of over 159%. Up to 800 people can be transported per hour. Up to 2.5 tons of goods can be carried as underload in standard operation.

With the SCHILTHORNBAHN 20XX project, the steepest and at the same time one of the most spectacular cable cars in the world will be built on a direct line between the Stechelberg valley station and the village of Mürren. Over a length of 1194 meters, it will cope with a height difference of 775 meters and reach a maximum steepness of 159.4%. In doing so, she will overcome the Mürrenfluh, which is used by many base jumpers as a jump ramp. These daring jumps can be observed up close from the new cable car. At a speed of 7 meters per second, the travel time will be 3 minutes and 54 seconds.

Efficient transportation of people and goods

Both cabins hold 85 people each. The transport capacity is 800 people per hour. The cable car is also used to supply goods to Mürren. In standard operation, 2.5 tons of goods can be carried under the cabins. For special transports without additional passenger transport, even 6.8 tons of payload are possible.

A global comparison

The currently steepest cable car in the world is operated in Norway: the Loen Skylift has a maximum gradient of 133%. The funicular with the greatest gradient is in Switzerland: the Stoosbahn has a maximum steepness of 110%. Like the railways in Loen and Stoos, the new aerial tramway between Stechelberg and Mürren is also being built by the Garaventa / Doppelmayr Group. It is the market leading manufacturer in ropeway construction.
