Steamboat Community Raises Nearly $30K During Scholarship Day

The Steamboat Springs community came out to support local youth ski programming during Steamboat Ski Resort’s annual Scholarship Day on Nov. 22, 2017, raising nearly $30,000 for the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club Scholarship Fund.

“Championing the next generation of skiers and snowboarders in Steamboat Springs is such an important part of passing along our passion for the outdoors,” said Rob Perlman, president and chief operating officer of Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp. “We are thrilled we were able to open on our scheduled date and provide an opportunity for fellow skiers and riders to come out and support local youth programs.”

The resort begins each season with Scholarship Day, the traditional opening day benefit where all proceeds from specially priced daily tickets support the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club Scholarship Fund. This year, $29,825 was raised from $25 tickets providing access to Christie Peak Express lift and five trails. In 27 years of hosting Scholarship Day, Steamboat Ski Resort has donated nearly $1.04 million to the fund, which provides scholarships to children participating in club activities from early stage programs to world-class competitors.

“Through these many years and ownership changes, the team at Steamboat Ski Resort has continued to build on its strong legacy of partnership with the club through Scholarship Day,” said Jim Boyne, executive director of SSWSC. “This day brings our entire community together to support local athletes and has helped thousands of kids with financial need over the years to pursue their dreams. Scholarship Day is uniquely Steamboat, and Steamboat Ski Resort is a stalwart partner in helping our athletes dream big, which has been a key to their success on the Olympic stage and in their lives.

For more than a century, the SSWSC has been providing opportunities for young athletes to become successful individuals and to achieve their personal goals in athletics and in life through participation in sports. The SSWSC offers training in all of the Nordic disciplines as well as Alpine, freestyle, freeskiing, snowboarding (Alpine and parks and pipes) and Telemark. Certified as a “Gold” Podium Club by U.S. Ski & Snowboard , the SSWSC is one of the oldest and most recognized ski clubs and has been named Club of the Year by U.S. Ski & Snowboard four times, most recently in 2017, more than any other club in the U.S.

The club’s heritage is a major reason Steamboat enjoys the moniker Steamboat-Ski Town, U.S.A.® No other town in North America has produced more winter Olympians than Steamboat Springs, a record 89 and counting. Steamboat’s Winter Olympians have represented 12 countries/territories and made over 150 Olympic appearances during 19 Winter Games. The upcoming games in South Korea are no exception, as Steamboat expects to send numerous athletes with ties to the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club to compete in February.
