Sports Club Of Chamonix Invests In Course And Infrastructure Ahead Of Kandahar 2020 World Cup
The famous Audi FIS Alpine World Cup course in the Chamonix valley will see the crème de la crème of the world’s best alpine ski racers return to its slopes on 8th and 9th of February 2020.
In preparation for the Kandahar 2020, the Sports Club of Chamonix has invested in the course and infrastructure on the famous black "La Verte des Houches" piste. In June 2017, the Community Council of the Chamonix valley approved the financial plan for Kandahar and for reconfiguring the Verte des Houches. The construction work was launched in April 2019.
Among the improvements carried out was the enlarging of the finish at the base of the slope, the widening of the track in the lower part, the crossing structures (road, extension of the skier bridge). Part of the budget was also devoted to studies and land management, as well as to burying a 63,000 v high-voltage line.
The works brought the track to international standard, in accordance with the FIS competition rules. The “La Verte des Houches” piste can now also host parallel slalom events.
The ambition of this large-scale work was also to allow, by the creation of suitable structures, a privileged reception of competitors and teams, partners, journalists but also the public, knowing that the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup the Chamonix Valley is a festive and popular event that can accommodate up to 30,000 people.
The overall budget of the reconstruction is substantial: 9.7 million euros were financed by contributions of the Regional Council Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, the Departmental Council of Haute Savoie, the French State, and the Community of communes in the Chamonix valley.
