Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis - One Of First Regions In Tyrol To Present Comprehensive Sustainability Strategy With Binding Action Plan

Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis is one of the first regions in Tyrol to present a comprehensive sustainability strategy with a binding action plan - they say “TOGETHER. CONSCIOUSLY. FOR GENERATIONS.”

The goal is deliberately ambitious, but it is clear to everyone: the development of Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis into one of the most family-friendly and sustainable destinations in the Alpine region is not a sprint, but a long-term process. And it requires strategic thinking and close cooperation between all stakeholders. Several projects have already been implemented in the region and further very concrete steps are planned by 2035. With the first comprehensive sustainability strategy, Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis is once again confirming its pioneering role - just as it did almost 40 years ago with the construction of the underground through Serfaus.

The projects that have already been implemented include the electrification of the hiking buses and the use of HVO100 fuel for additional buses, a new timetable to optimize public transport and the "S'Fest im Dorf" series of events in Ladis as a certified green event. There are also employee parties and an apprenticeship initiative to strengthen the regional labor market as well as measures to promote local agriculture and regional products.

Much more is planned for 2035. Next year, public transport will be further improved and photovoltaic systems expanded. In the long term, up to 2035, the focus will also be on expanding the e-charging infrastructure, supporting business transfers and expanding affordable business premises for new businesses. Also on the "to do" list: social housing, creating social meeting places, leisure activities and strengthening clubs. Another important point is the modernization of spatial planning.

The sustainability strategy was developed jointly by representatives of the municipalities, the mountain railways and the tourism association. Interest groups and companies in the region were also involved in the process. In terms of content, the focus was not on developing a pure tourism strategy, but on a comprehensive regional sustainability strategy that includes all sectors. For those responsible for the Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis region, it is clear that sustainability can only be achieved together with the population and other stakeholders. Locals, employees and holiday guests are invited to contribute their ideas and suggestions to make the region fit for the future.

"I was able to start my work as sustainability coordinator in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis even before the legal obligation. The region's stakeholders took the initiative of their own accord to develop a sustainable strategy with a binding action plan. What was particularly impressive was the respectful way in which everyone was treated throughout the entire development process. This joint approach reinforces our commitment to promoting sustainable and resource-saving development for all sectors and the population," says Katharina Lentsch, the sustainability coordinator for the Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis region.

The core message of the strategy underlines the central values and goals of the region. The emphasis is on the fact that significant, sustainable successes can only be achieved "together" through the commitment of residents, companies and guests. "Conscious" stands for responsible action in all areas - ecological, social and economic - and emphasizes considered decisions with regard to their long-term effects. "For generations" focuses on the future and on creating a stable, livable region not only for the present, but above all for future generations.

Lukas Heymich, Chairman of the Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis Tourism Association said "For Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, sustainability means making the living and recreational space fit for the future - for locals, guests and employees. This can only be achieved if we bring ecology, economy and social responsibility into harmony. It is an ongoing process that takes time, because the requirements are constantly evolving. Only if we all pull together can we take advantage of opportunities and address risks at an early stage in order to secure a sustainable future for all stakeholders."

Dr. Christof Schalber, Managing Director of the Komperdell cable car added "The Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis cable cars, as the region's key tourism service providers, are striving to embed sustainable thinking and action in their operations. To this end, in addition to a clear strategic orientation, key sustainability-relevant fields of action have been defined. Building on this, the first projects have already been initiated and partially implemented at almost all sustainability levels. The Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis cable cars would like to use these measures to make a contribution to the positive and sustainable development of the region."

Simon Schwendinger, planning association chairman and mayor of the municipality of Fiss agreed "The Sustainability and Future Committee is made up of 18 representatives from the municipalities, the mountain railways and the Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis Tourism Association. In this unique constellation of the project group, the sustainability strategy for Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis can be implemented together. By making decisions in all committees, long-term implementation can be achieved."
