Seilbahnen Schweiz Releases Season Review
The 20th edition of the Swiss season review has been published! How many ski days were there in the 2023/24 winter season?
A new season that confirms a return to normality
Following on from the previous season, which marked a return to normality, the 2023/24 season was mainly influenced by snow and sun conditions, which were once again not the best, with very mild weather despite some very heavy snowfall at high altitudes.
It may be helpful to refer again to the words of last year's introduction: these are simply part of the normality of skiing, without having to resort to the platitudes of an ecologically correct way of thinking spread by the media.
Some characteristic points of the 2023/24 season:
- Unfavourable climatic conditions: An even milder winter than the previous one, but this time with heavy snowfalls at high altitudes.
- Guest numbers are still holding up well, with a slight increase compared to the previous season, both among domestic and foreign guests.
- Domestic guests responded more strongly to the current conditions than international guests, although the proportion of foreign skiers changed over the course of the season.
- A recovery in the turnover of the ski resorts, which are improving their tariff yield after a long period of deterioration. A return to a correct level is necessary to ensure the survival of the ski resorts in a context of rising operating costs.
- The average season length in the main winter sports resorts (which account for 95% of visitor numbers in Switzerland) was hardly affected by weather conditions.
- A number of smaller ski areas at low altitudes remained closed or operated with limited capacity. These areas experienced sharp declines in visitor numbers, but had only a very limited impact on overall traffic.
- Bucking the trend, a ski resort that had been closed for eleven years was reopened in the 2023/24 season.
