Schladming: Groundbreaking Ceremony For 10-person “Rohrmoos I” Gondola Held

The symbolic groundbreaking ceremony for the 10-seater gondola lift from Schladming to Rohrmoos, which was approved at the beginning of July 2023, recently took place under a bright sky and in the presence of State Tourism Councilor Barbara Eibinger-Miedl, community representatives and those responsible for the Planai-Hochwurzen cable cars. From December 2024, the new lift will replace the current 2-seater chairlift, whose license would have expired at the end of 2025. The construction of the mountain station has now begun.

“There have been considerations and efforts since 2008 to renew the cable car up to Rohrmoos. During the planning, many concerns and wishes had to be taken into account and economic facts also played an important role. “I am all the more pleased that we were able to set a visible example for this important cable car project with the symbolic groundbreaking ceremony,” said Planai Managing Director Dir. Georg Bliem.

“With the new gondola lift, the Planai-Hochwurzen-Bahnen are once again focusing on improving quality and increasing comfort for their guests. “They are and remain the most important leading company in the Schladming-Dachstein adventure region and an equally important tourist figurehead in Styria,” says State Councilor Eibinger-Miedl.

Maximum passenger comfort – for the first time in the 4-mountain ski area: ski transport in the gondola

The new 10-passenger gondola lift from cable car manufacturer Doppelmayr is designed with a capacity of 2,400 people per hour. 30 panoramic gondolas ensure maximum passenger comfort, and the transportation equipment is garaged in the mountain station. Further requirements such as safe transport of children are taken into account as well as the taking of alternative sports equipment. A first in the 4-mountain ski area is that the skis on the new lift can be taken into the gondolas and stored there. This makes getting in and out quicker and, above all, easier and passenger comfort increases considerably, especially for families with small children.

The cable car project involves an investment volume of 13.5 million euros

Construction of the new 10-seater gondola lift will begin in autumn 2023 with the construction of the mountain station. In 2024, track work and the renovation of the entire valley station area will follow with a new lounge/bar, a large sports shop, improved entrances and exits including a lift and new checkout areas, etc. The focus will be on contemporary architecture. The forecourt situation at the Planai West building should also be significantly improved, especially with regard to the ski bus service. There should also be a walking connection from the mountain station to the center of Rohrmoos.

The total project costs for the cable car areas - without taking into account the renovation work at the Planai West valley station - amount to around 13.5 million euros. The planned opening date is December 2024
