Schilthorn - Canton Approves Cable Car Corridor

The amendment to the building regulations no. 49 with the definition of the cable car corridor for the new cable car, decided by the Lauterbrunnen municipal assembly, was approved by the Canton of Bern. All objections were resolved by the end of 2020. Planning approval by the Federal Office of Transport is expected in early summer. The SCHILTHORNBAHN 20XX project is still on schedule.

The amendment to the building regulations no.49 decided by the Lauterbrunnen municipal assembly in November 2019 was approved by the canton of Bern. In the autumn of 2019, five objections were submitted in the cantonal approval process, in which, among other things, the cable car corridor for the new cable car is defined. "Four opposing parties had already opposed the building regulations and the cable car corridor in advance and underpinned the resistance with the objections," says Christoph Egger, director of Schilthornbahn AG, looking back. “Two additional objections were received as part of the federal planning approval process, which dealt with specific aspects of the project.

Planning approval from BAV expected in early summer

The planning approval by the Federal Office of Transport (FOT) is currently still being processed and is expected for early summer 2021. At the end of April 2020, Schilthornbahn AG was able to submit the application documents for the new construction project SCHILTHORNBAHN 20XX to the responsible federal office. The public edition then took place from May 11 to June 9, 2020 at the Lauterbrunnen municipal administration and in the tourist office in Mürren. Alternatively, the extensive documents could also be viewed electronically due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Outlook for the SCHILTHORNBAHN 20XX project schedule

The company is very well on schedule with the SCHILTHORNBAHN 20XX project. After planning approval has been granted in early summer 2021, the first preparatory work due to COVID cannot begin until spring 2022. The installation of three material ropeways from Stechelberg to Mürren and via Birg to the Schilthorn is planned. The entire delivery and removal of the materials to be disposed of should be carried out with these material ropeways. The first construction work in Mürren and on Birg is scheduled to begin in autumn 2022.
