Saxony Continues To Invest In Winter Sports

With the Saxon winter sports special program, 4.9 million euros will be invested in organized winter sports this year. The cabinet approved this distribution proposal submitted by Sports Minister Armin Schuster today.

Sports Minister Armin Schuster: “This special program is primarily intended to support projects at top-class sports facilities that unfortunately have not been taken into account in the federal government's annual funding plan. Because these additional investments secure the infrastructure for the existing traditional locations of winter sports in the long term. In this way, we not only remain attractive as a venue for competitions, but also strengthen our winter sports enthusiasts, clubs and tourism.«

A total of five winter sports facilities are funded:

  • The Erzgebirge Oberwiesenthal e. V. 2,767,670.48 euros to expand the snowmaking system including snow water pond storage.
  • The Zweckverband Vogtland Arena receives 800,000 euros from the Free State of Saxony for various measures such as the procurement of snow holding nets, the renovation of the run-out ramps and a general renovation of the ascent aid of the Vogtland ski jumps and the repair of the snow-making system and expansion of the Vogtland Arena.
  • In the town of Altenberg, the biathlon arena is being expanded for use by disabled sports for training close to competitions. The Free State supports this measure with 600,000 euros.
  • The funding of 450,000 euros also supports the purchase of a conductor rail for the ascent aid at the Fichtelbergschanze K 95 in Oberwiesenthal.
  • The district of Saxon Switzerland-Osterzgebirge also received support of 328,000 euros for the roofing of curves 10-11 of the Altenberg bobsleigh track.

Saxony continues to invest in winter sports

With the special program for organized winter sports, an opportunity was created to support investment projects in sports facilities in addition to existing subsidies. This state funding program is currently set to run for five years. "All in all, we are making a further 33 million euros available for Saxon winter sports from 2024 to 2027 through the special program," said Minister of Sport Schuster.

The measures are co-financed with taxes based on the budget approved by the Saxon state parliament.
