Ropeways Through The City: INTERALPIN 2025 Showcases The Urban Mobility Of Tomorrow

INTERALPIN is the world's leading trade fair for alpine technologies and will once again be the meeting place for industry leaders, innovators and decision-makers from the global ropeway world at Messe Innsbruck from 6 to 9 May 2025. In addition to key topics such as passenger transport, piste and snow management, safety and access systems, the 2025 trade fair will increasingly focus on the topic of ‘urban mobility’.

Up in the air: increasing interest in cable car-related solutions in urban areas

Increasing demand for mobility, lack of space and climate protection requirements pose major challenges for urban transport worldwide. Urban cable car systems offer a new level of efficiency, flexibility and environmental compatibility, as confirmed by a number of recent studies. They take up hardly any floor space, are quiet, emission-free and can be easily integrated into existing transport systems. They create new direct connections in urban areas, particularly where topography is difficult - for example across rivers, valleys or railway tracks.

Under the title ‘City Cable Car Solutions’ (3CS), INTERALPIN 2025 will show how cable car technology works in cities as part of mobility strategies. Trade visitors will be able to experience the latest developments, pilot projects and examples of best practice at first hand at the stands of the technology leaders. The INTERALPIN INSPIRATION DAYS will focus on this topic in presentations and discussion panels. ‘We are delighted to be able to make INTERALPIN even more versatile with the topic of ‘City Cable Car Solutions’. For target groups that we already welcome to the trade fair, this will create targeted, expanded and specialised offers – both in the exhibition and as part of the INSPIRATION DAYS,’ reports Christian Mayerhofer, Managing Director of Congress Messe Innsbruck (CMI).

Above the rooftops of the city: best practices from around the world

In Latin America, urban cable cars have long been part of the cityscape: in Mexico City, over 100,000 people travel on ‘Cablebús’ and ‘Mexicable’ every day, while in La Paz and El Alto, ‘Mi Teleférico’ connects the urban fabric over a distance of more than 30 kilometres. New projects are also emerging in Europe - such as the Câble C1 in the Paris metropolitan area, which will connect several municipalities from 2025, or planned systems in Trieste and Herne. At INTERALPIN, market-leading companies such as Doppelmayr and LEITNER will be presenting how such systems work and how they can be realised in an economically, technically and urbanistically viable way.

Thomas Pichler, CEO of the Doppelmayr Group, sees this as a trend-setting development: ‘Mobility in cities will benefit from the use of urban ropeways as a sensible and sustainable addition to public transport services. Giving this topic space at INTERALPIN and bringing it closer to an international audience is a step in the right direction. INTERALPIN has established itself as a leading platform where decision-makers can meet, exchange ideas and find inspiration. We believe it is very important to utilise this opportunity and give space to urban mobility in order to move boldly into a sustainable future.’

Martin Leitner, CEO of LEITNER AG, is looking forward to the presentation at the trade fair: ‘We are delighted to present the results of our intensive innovation and development work in the field of sustainable intermodal passenger transport in urban areas to our customers, trade visitors and all interested parties at INTERALPIN 2025. For the first time, our unique hybrid solution ConnX - the system developed and patented by LEITNER for the ‘Last Mile Connection’ between urban ropeways and various other transport systems - can be experienced up close and walked through.’

INTERALPIN 2025: impulses for the urban mobility of tomorrow

In addition to the impressive presentations by the exhibitors, the INSPIRATION DAYS will focus on content with Session 3 ‘Urban Mobility’ on Wednesday, 7 May. After the keynote speech by Claudio Büchel, Deputy Director of Verkehrsbetriebe Glattal, European model projects from Paris and Trieste will be presented. He will then be joined by transport and spatial planning experts Giulio Bernetti, Benedikt Prinzing, Konrad Bergmeister and Stephan Tischler to discuss potentials and implementation strategies. India's ambitious mobility strategy, which envisages urban cable cars as an integral part of modern infrastructure, will then be presented.

Anyone who wants to help shape the urban mobility of the future will find inspiration, partners and perspectives at INTERALPIN 2025. After all, the cable car is well on the way to developing from a niche topic to a viable solution in the city - efficient, environmentally friendly and visionary.
