Reira Iwabuchi & Marcus Kleveland Win The Final Snowboard Slopestyle World Cup Of The Season
The premiere of the FIS Snowboard World Cup in Silvaplana went down today under perfect weather- and course conditions. For the very first time the world’s best snowboarders gathered at Corvatsch Park (2.702 m.a.s.l.) for the FIS Snowboard World Cup Finals. Next to titles, globes and CHF 50.000 prize-money it was also about quota places for the upcoming Olympic season, which was mirrored in the high-class starting field. Reira Iwabuchi (JPN) and Marcus Kleveland (NOR) dominated and are the beaming winners at the end of a memorable season.
Crystal Globes 2021 for Gasser and Kleveland – The big Crystal Globe for the FIS Park & Pipe World Cup Ranking as well as the small one for the Slopestyle Ranking went to Anna Gasser (AUT) and Marcus Kleveland for their performances today and their top results this winter. Marcus pretty much won everything there was to win this season.
FIS Snowboard World Cup Corvatsch 2021 – The contest – The Slopestyle course at Corvatsch Park presented itself from its best side for the 88 riders from 27 countries and from all continents. What a squad! The top 8 women and 16 men from the qualification made the cut to the finals. The best of two runs counted.
In the women’s field Reira Iwabuchi (JPN) scored 91 points for her first run putting her into the lead, which she didn’t ever give up as none of the riders was able to come close to her score. Behind Reira on 2nd was her team colleague Kokomo Murase already on the podium this season in Kreischberg. Tess Coady completed the Corvatsch podium on 3rd, just like in Laax and Aspen. Olympic Champion Anna Gasser finished the season with a 4th place.
In the men’s finals Marcus Kleveland from Norway was the man of the day. In sovereign style he convinced with his first run, which earned him 96 out of 100 possible points. Also in the second round none of the other finalists managed to top his score and so Marcus celebrated a deserved victory lap. Marcus was over the moon: „I landed one of my best runs today. It feels so good!“ Second place for the young Canadian Liam Brearly, followed by Chris Corning (USA) in 3rd position.
Successful World Cup 2021 and outlook for 2025 World Championship application – The successful premiere of the Snowboard World Cup and the 8th edition of the Freeski World Cup puts the Corvatsch Park into the spotlight of the race to eventually host the Freestyle World Championships 2025. Despite the short-term takeover of the Snowboard event from Spindleruy Mlyn (CZE) and adverse weather conditions before the Freeski finals, the local organizing team stood the test and were pleased about much praise from riders, coaches and FIS contest directors. Also due to the Covid-19 protection concept, which Corvatsch AG developed and implemented together with Swiss-Ski.
