Red Bull The Edge - Matterhorn VR In Lucerne's Museum of Transport
Year after year, thousands of mountaineers fulfill their dream of climbing the Matterhorn. Such a summit experience has also been possible in the Verkehrshaus in Lucerne since June 23. Together with the Red Bull athlete Jérémie Heitz and the Zermatt mountain guide Sam Anthamatten, visitors can virtually climb the summit of the Matterhorn with VR glasses and on a climbing wall.
After a video briefing with Red Bull athlete Jérémie Heitz and his friend and Zermatt mountain guide Sam Anthamatten, you are equipped with a climbing harness and VR glasses to tackle the last few meters to the summit of the Matterhorn. Arrived at an altitude of 4478 meters above sea level, you can then deserve to enjoy the breathtaking view - a feeling of happiness that otherwise only mountaineers know ...
A pioneering project
Red Bull The Edge is the result of an innovative and longstanding collaboration between Swiss and international pioneers. Originated as an idea by the Geneva film producer Garidi, they further developed the project with Red Bull Switzerland and in cooperation with the Swiss Museum of Transport. Thanks to a completely new 3D technology, the agency Xstudios from Orlando transformed the drone recordings into an interactive and realistic climbing adventure that makes the seemingly inaccessible mountain accessible to everyone.
In the outdoor exhibition you can find out more about the legend of the Matterhorn, the long tradition of Zermatt mountain guides and mountain rescue services, innovations in mountain railways and the extraordinary achievements of contemporary athletes. On the top floor of the climbing pavilion you can also enjoy a wonderful view of the iconic mountain by day and night - filmed in a 24-hour time lapse by the well-known alpinist and VR filmmaker Jonathan Griffith.
Climbing like Jérémie Heitz and Sam Anthamatten
To make a mountain like the Matterhorn accessible, you need the right mountain guides. When Red Bull Jérémie Heitz and Sam Anthamatten presented the idea, they were immediately involved. Sam has climbed the Matterhorn countless times as a Zermatt mountain guide, Jérémie himself has never been up before this project. For both of them, this mountain is still on their bucket list for a freeride descent. Jonathan Griffith filmed their ascent in 360 ° and the two also accompany the visitors in the VR experience up to the summit.
The experience is accessible to all mountain fans from 12 years and a height of over 140 cm. The regular ticket price is CHF 24, reduced tickets for students, schoolchildren, senior citizens and in combination with the Verkehrshaus day pass are available from CHF 19. Tickets can only be booked with a pre-reserved time slot, online in the Verkehrshaus ticket shop or at the museum ticket office.
In general, the Red Bull Media World in 2021 is all about the mountains with the special exhibition “Altitude - Highest Performance on the Mountain”. Visitors can fly over the Engadin with the Icaros training device, experience a virtual ascent of Everest, challenge the multiple Red Bull X-Alps winner Chrigl Maurer in a paraglider and in the 360 ° VR documentation "Matterhorn VR" by Jonathan Griffith Red Bull athletes Jérémie Heitz and mountain guide Sam Anthamatten accompany them to the summit.
