Progress Report Andermatt Responsible 2022: Some Sustainability Goals Exceeded

Sustainability is a priority for the Andermatt Swiss Alps Group and Andermatt-Sedrun Sport AG. The companies have therefore set themselves ambitious ESG targets. The progress report Andermatt Responsible shows the details and provides an overview of the greenhouse gas emissions and key figures. For example, emissions per guest have largely fallen.

In 2022, the Andermatt Swiss Alps Group and Andermatt-Sedrun Sport AG calculated their greenhouse gas footprint for the third time. Total emissions were 44.4 percent higher than last year. This is due to the intensive construction phase in Andermatt Reuss and the larger number of guests in the ski area and in the restaurants. In operation, emissions have increased by 18 percent: because there were more guests on site due to the lifting of the pandemic measures, the average emissions per guest have nevertheless fallen for the most part, since the partly fixed greenhouse gas emissions from the ski area, hotel and catering industry are attributable to a larger number of guests .

Low scope 2 emissions

The indirect emissions (Scope 2) caused by the provision of energy were again very low because the electricity and heat supply in all new buildings is climate-neutral and the mountain railway systems are operated with CO2e-neutral electricity from the region. The companies were able to reduce consumption by 10 percent compared to 2021.

Overall, the Andermatt Swiss Alps Group and Andermatt-Sedrun Sport AG used more fossil fuels, more water and more electricity in 2022 than in the previous year. Less energy was used for heating and cooling. In addition, less waste was incinerated (-5.5 percent). As in 2019 and 2021, greenhouse gas emissions from upstream and downstream activities accounted for the majority of emissions in 2022. In 2022, these were 48.5 percent higher than in 2021. Here, too, the main causes are the construction work and the higher number of guests on the mountain railways and in the catering trade.

Projects

In numerous projects, the companies of the Andermatt Swiss Alps Group and Andermatt-Sedrun Sport AG have taken measures to ensure more sustainable operations. One focus was on reducing waste. Several restaurants at Andermatt-Sedrun Sport AG, The Chedi Andermatt and the Radisson Blu Hotel Reussen have implemented Foodsave projects and adapted their processes to avoid wasting food. In addition, soap residue is collected at The Chedi Andermatt for Sapo Cycle. The non-profit organization has people with disabilities recycle these and then distributes them to improve the hygiene conditions of families in need. The group's IT department has recycled the disused hardware instead of disposing of it.

In addition, the recycling offer in the Andermatt Reuss district has been greatly expanded and an open refrigerator has been added. Food that is no longer required can be deposited there. Andermatt-Sedrun Sport AG has upgraded a low moor in Val Val, renewed the signaling of the wildlife protection zones and intensified communication. And at the cross-group future day, the youngsters from the region were given an insight into the diversity of the destination.

Sustainability goals and management

In order to anchor the topic of sustainability in the company strategies, sustainability goals were defined in 2021 in the areas of environment, society and economy. In addition, in 2022 the companies established the Andermatt Responsible Board, a body that strategically manages these issues. Among other things, the Andermatt Swiss Alps Group and Andermatt-Sedrun Sport AG want to be climate-neutral in their operations by 2030, have increased diversity among employees and be sustainably profitable as a company.

With various sub-goals and planned measures, the course for this change has been set and several goals have already been achieved. The rate of local occupations in the catering industry was increased to 40 percent (the target was 35 percent) and the amount of waste was reduced by 28.3 percent (the target: 20 percent). In addition, all buildings and facilities of the Andermatt Swiss Alps Group and Andermatt-Sedrun Sport AG have been supplied with 100% CO2-neutral electricity for several years. The companies are therefore ready for the next steps.
