With the "first and only" Dixie Band of Fieberbrunn, the "Blackriver Dixielanders" and top-class musicians from the American southern states, Bourbon Street was a hit with its first edition in 1993.
In its 30-year history, the blues and jazz mile in Fieberbrunn has achieved legendary status far beyond the region's borders. Greats of the scene, such as Wilko Johnson, Stan Webb's Chicken Shack, Climax Blues Band, Fanfare Ciocarlia or the Grande Dame of Gospel, Jeanne Carroll, but also numerous well-known names from Austria (Andy Baum, Harri Stojka, Die Strottern, Kollegium Kalksburg) and from other European countries, Stefan Obwaller, the musical director of Bourbonstreet, brought him to the festival in Fieberbrunn.
“Unforgettable are the gospel masses in the parish church with Sydney Ellis or Patty Miller and the spectacular shows, such as the Las Vegas Show, which gave the festival a special touch. But the focus was always on the musical experience,” explains the chairman of the cultural committee, Wolfgang Schwaiger, who helped found Bourbon Street in the market town.
“Back to the roots” in the future
After a 3-year break, the legendary Bourbon Street is returning and on August 12th it will immerse the center of Fieberbrunn in the special New Orleans flair. With a great range of music, two stages in the town center and in-house bands at the landlords of the Alte Post, the Neue Post and in the Riverhouse and the village café, the festival is experiencing a furious revival. On the main square, both the Castello and the Alte Post provide southern culinary delights and of course the innkeepers on Dorfstraße also have New Orleans specialties on their menus. “But the music is clearly in the foreground in the new edition. After 30 years, it is a bit of a return to the origins of Bourbon Street – back to the roots in the future, so to speak,” explains Wolfgang Schwaiger.
For example, "Kai Strauss & the Electric Blues Allstars", who received the German Blues Award as Germany's best blues band, could be won as headliners. The international group is on the main stage in the village square from 10 p.m. to midnight. Music fans can expect a premiere performance in Austria with “King Kurt” from Great Britain. Under the motto "East plays West" the performance of the exceptional pianist Olga Balabon is eagerly awaited. The Ukrainian harmonises classical music with modern rhythms and will be heard in the village cafe together with singer Hannah Dödlinger. With Cactus Deuce, Edgar, TitaToma and RRRitsch, other top-class artists are in the limelight. The Big Band St. Johann provides a grandiose start, in the truest sense of the word. The 20 musicians: inside and 2 singers will lead into the evening from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a great mix of swing, jazz, rock and pop. Likewise the Knappenmusik Fieberbrunn, who inspire with well-known hits, songs and some specials from their brass repertoire.
