Photo Book Gives An Artistic Perspective On St. Moritz

Sometimes it’s the quiet moments that speak the loudest. For the new “Souvenir St. Moritz” coffee-table book, the American photographer Colin Dodgson carried out extensive explorations of St. Moritz and its surroundings to capture his artistic impressions on camera. During his forays into the Engadine valley, he fell in love with the natural environment there. “I consider myself lucky to have been able to experience this wonderful part of the world. I can still sense the colour of the ice-cold glacial lakes.” Characterized by wry humour and a romanticized view of the world, his pictures offer up unusual and interesting insights. Dodgson engaged top Dutch model Rianne Van Rompaey for the shoots.

Dodgson, who has homes in California and London, is a leading force in the London movement that resurrected the use of traditional darkroom printing techniques. His unique colour palette and use of natural light have become the visual signatures of his work. Before Colin Dodgson, the Norwegian photographer Torbjørn Rødland and Roe Ethridge from the United States provided pictures for the book series.

The “Souvenir” books were conceived in 2019 with the aim of showcasing St. Moritz through the eyes of world-famous photographers. Since then, a photographer has been given the opportunity every year to spend time as artist in residence and present their own personal take on the region and its people. The choice of subject matter and models for the publication is entirely up to the photographer, as is the final selection of the images to be used. This artistic freedom guarantees that nothing interferes with the photographer’s lens-eye view, so the reader can discover the many aspects of St. Moritz from a completely different and individual perspective in each edition.

ST. MORITZ: INSPIRATION AND INFLUENCE

At the same time, the photo book epitomizes the high status enjoyed by art and culture throughout the history of St. Moritz. The town has frequently inspired famous artists from all over the world and had a lasting influence on their creativity. “The edition of ‘Souvenirs’ builds on this tradition, which is an integral part of the DNA of St. Moritz,” said Marijana Jakic, Brand Manager St. Moritz and executive board member of Engadin St. Moritz Tourismus AG.
