Organising Committee Draws Positive Conclusion After Oberwiesenthal 2020 FIS Nordic Junior World Ski Championships
Three weeks after the end of the FIS Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2020 in Oberwiesenthal, the organisers can look back on a successfully concluded programme of events at the foot of the Fichtelberg mountain from 28th February to 8th March 2020.
In total, over 700 young Cross-Country, Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined athletes from 42 countries were in Oberwiesenthal, alongside 800 team staff, supervisors, officials, volunteers and guests. In ten days, a total of more than 15,000 people came to Oberwiesenthal to cheer on the winter sports stars of tomorrow. Halfway through the event, more than 10,000 tons of food were served. Also the events in the evenings, especially the award ceremonies, were well received by visitors.
About 100 media representatives from all over the world reported on the Championships. The commentators at the ski jumping hill and in the Sparkassen Skiarena cross-country venue offered the audience more than 40 hours of entertainment. The action was featured on a livestream, which the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR) also used for its TV coverage, so that fans and the families of the athletes in their respective countries could to share in the excitement.
"It was the best JWSC I have ever experienced. I will remember this World Championship for a very long time. You didn't have the feeling that it was a youth championship. We have been taken as seriously as the big athletes. The spectators all came to see us and cheer us on, and it just felt great”, said Canadian youngster Remi Drolet. Gold medallist Gus Schumacher, from Team USA, added: “ We would like to thank the organisers and all the volunteers. It has been one of the best-organised championships we have experienced so far. It felt very special and we are very grateful for that.”
The head of the Organising Committee Christian Freitag was also satisfied: “I have to pinch myself. We put so much energy and sweat into the preparations and sometimes, we were close to despair, especially when it came to the weather in the weeks before the championships. And then everything worked out so well during the event, we could not have dreamed any better.“
“We would like to thank the many volunteers on site, the athletes and the officials, our organisation team, who worked hard day and night for this dream. We also thank the partners and sponsors, without whom it would not have been possible and all the spectators, who were the cherry on top for creating an indescribable atmosphere. We know now that with a cooperation of all the local clubs, like we saw during the JWSC, enables us to host events on this scale. We are looking forward to the next challenges. ”
