Odermatt Is Quadruple Globe Winner Again After Taking Second Downhill Title

The Swiss great has done it again; following the cancellation of the final Men’s Downhill race of the season, at Sun Valley, Marco Odermatt (SUI/Stöckli) secured his second career Downhill Crystal Globe, and second crown in a row.

It also means that the racer has won four Crystal Globes for the second consecutive season – the Overall, Super G and Giant Slalom titles were already in his possession. It is his 13th Globe overall for the 27-year-old in his prime: Marcel Hirscher with 20, leads the way.

Odermatt finished 83 points ahead of compatriot Franjo von Allmen (SUI/Head), in second place, and only needed to come in the top 14 places, had the Sun Valley race gone ahead, to guarantee victory.

Alexis Monney (SUI/Stöckli) finished third to complete an all-Swiss podium

“It’s one of the biggest things you can achieve as a skier, to win the Downhill Globe,” said Odermatt. “It’s a special feeling. The beginning of the season was very strong from my side, with the victory from Val Gardena, and another victory in Wengen, with a home crowd it is unbelievable.

“And also the last two races, Kvitfjell, a slope where I couldn’t be fast in the last years, to be on the podium twice was a big achievement for myself.

“It’s very sad [for the last race to be cancelled], especially when you see that many people.

“It’s a shame that the hard work [preparing] the slope here didn’t pay off. But you win a globe in the whole season, not in the last race, so I am very proud of this performance.

“It’s quite strange, I got up in the morning to try and fight for another race, another victory. But there were so many delays. You have to keep up the mood, but you get the feeling that the wind won’t go away.”

Von Allen also reflected on a fine winter.

"I wanted to race of course, there was nothing to lose, I could only win," he said. "But at the end, Marco was better. It's nothing but fair that he wins. It's an amazing season, it worked out really well."

Monney added: "About my season, I'm really happy to be on the podium, as three Swiss. We have to say a big thank you to the [Swiss] staff."
