Nordic Race Night In Tirol's Galtür

Galtür at the head of the Paznaun valley in Austria’s Tirol is celebrating its 21st anniversary as the region’s first climatic health-resort with a Nordic Race Night.

Cross-country is one of the most energetic of snowsports and attracts sports enthusiasts of all ages. To reflect this appeal, the Galtür Nordic Race Night has races for the very young and with no upper age limit.

The Paznaun villages of Galtür, Ischgl, Kappl and See are collectively one of Tirol’s Nordic ski specialist areas and have much to offer cross-country fans with wide open Nordic ski tracks, snow reliability, infrastructure and expert advice. In addition, this winter Galtür has new snowmaking equipment for the Nordic tracks, ensuring a full season of white circuits from December through till April.

The gentle peace of the sport will be put to one side for the excitement of Race Night on 5 April, when competitors take to the tracks and the specially made course through the village for qualification and elimination rounds. And there’s €7900 of prize money up for grabs.

Galtür has 73kms of cross-country ski tracks from 1377m to 2000m altitude. Nordic skiing is said to use 90% of all muscles and boost the cardiovascular system, whilst being easy on the joints.

In addition to cross-country, Galtür has 43kms of downhill slopes, served by ten skilifts.

The village has held the title of ‘climatic health resort’ since April 1997 – and became the first in Tirol to do so – because of its air quality that is virtually pollen and pollutant-free according to key weather readings, monitored by a central office in Vienna.
