New Panoramic Vehicles For The Monte Brè Funicular

The Monte Brè funicular in Lugano has connected the city with the 933-meter-high panoramic mountain since 1908 and is an integral part of the tourist offer. The route runs in two sections and offers spectacular views of Lake Lugano and the surrounding Alps. After several smaller modernizations, a larger one followed: new vehicles now ensure more comfort and quality of experience.
The vehicles of the second section of the Monte Brè funicular were replaced after more than 40 years of service. Garaventa took over the construction management of the project and coordinated all work, from planning to successful commissioning. The company was also responsible for the production of the running gear. Production of the new vehicles began in August 2024 and was carried out by CWA.
What is particularly striking is the characteristic paintwork, which preserves the retro charm of the funicular railway while meeting modern requirements. The two new panoramic carriages have space for 70 people instead of the previous 68. They are equipped with a tinted panoramic glass roof, which, thanks to integrated sun protection, offers pleasant travel comfort even on sunny days. The side windows were designed to be as wide as possible in order to make the panorama as enjoyable as possible.
Thanks to the barrier-free design of the vehicles, access is also possible for guests with reduced mobility. In addition, special areas for mountain bikes have been integrated to meet the increasing demand for outdoor activities.
The entire conversion was successfully completed within a six-week operational break.
The production of the new carriages began last August with CWA Constructions SA in Olten, the winner of the tender. The project is the result of collaboration between leading companies in the field, including Garaventa AG, responsible for the construction of the chassis and project management, and Sisag AG, which handled the electrical and electromechanical control systems for the funicular.
The new carriages combine the charm of retro design with cutting-edge technology, providing a ride that blends history and innovation without compromising on safety. They are also fully accessible to people with reduced mobility, thanks to modernization work carried out at the stations by technicians and engineers to comply with the Disability Act (BehiG). These efforts, which include the removal of architectural barriers, are nearing completion, enabling direct access to the carriages for wheelchair users.
The new carriage configuration also facilitates the transport of mountain bikes, meeting the needs of sports enthusiasts.
