New Music Festival For St. Johann In Tirol

In the midst of the festive Easter season, a Baroque Music Festival will take place in St. Johann for the first time in 2025 – a highlight for music lovers and culture enthusiasts. From April 13 to 26, St. Johann will be the venue for an impressive program highlighting the beauty and diversity of Baroque music.

The festival offers a unique opportunity to experience the works of great composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber, George Frideric Handel, and Antonio Vivaldi at various venues in St. Johann. Renowned artists and ensembles will bring the venerable sounds of this era to life and take the audience on a musical journey into the 17th and 18th centuries. The concerts will take place in the deanery parish church, the hospital church of St. Nicholas near Weitau, and the parish hall. These concert venues offer a perfect acoustic and architectural ambience.

Baroque music unfolds its power especially during the Easter season, which symbolizes hope and renewal. The profound and often spiritual compositions invite listeners to explore the central themes of the season. The festival is organized by the Kitzbühel Alps – St. Johann in Tirol Tourist Board, and Reinhold Wieser is the artistic director.

The program

The festival will open on April 13th with the Schwanthaler Trumpet Consort's program "L'arte della trombetta." It continues on April 16th with "Bach - Brass & more" in the St. Nicholas Hospital Church near Weitau, performed by the Paris Lodron Ensemble from Salzburg and soprano Waltraud Nagl. Another highlight will be Heinrich Biber's "Rosenkranz Sonatas." These will be performed on April 21st by Annegret Siedel (solo violin) and Hans-Josef Knaust (harpsichord). Before the performance, there will be an introduction to the work by Univ.Ass.in Mag.a. Dr. Bernadeta Czapraga from the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. The open-air event follows on April 23rd with Georg Friedrich Handel's "Fireworks Music," performed by the St. Johann National Music Band. Video artist Wolfgang Hofer will illuminate the deanery church with fiery images, and a salute from the St. Johann Feller Rifle Company will further enhance the event. Following a spiritual inspiration from Dean Erwin Neumayer on April 25, there will be an insight into Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons," before the grand finale, "Virtuoso Recorders in the Baroque Period," takes place on April 26. Performing are eight Mozarteum students with their assistant, Prof. Dorothee Oberlinger. Families are cordially invited to the parish hall. A Baroque tour of the town with Peter Fischer will also take place on this day.
