New Edition Of The “Souvenir St. Moritz” Series Is Now Available

A new edition of the “Souvenir St. Moritz” series is now available: with his camera, American photographer Lucas Blalock captures St. Moritz from his perspective. The art project was recently presented in magazine form at the Swiss Consulate General in New York City.

In the presence of the artist, Marijana Jakic, CEO of St. Moritz Tourismus AG, and Niculin Jäger, Swiss Consul General in New York, around 80 guests from the New York art and culture scene gathered for the book launch at the Swiss Consulate General on Third Avenue in Manhattan. Under the title “Souvenir Cinema” Blalock transformed the Consulate lobby into an imaginary tourism office, continuing his artistic analysis of St. Moritz in his hometown. The exhibition can be viewed until 9 May 2025 and can be visited after prior registration via newyork.culture@eda.admin.ch

The latest “Souvenir St. Moritz” coffee table book traces the footsteps of American photographic artist in and around St. Moritz. Known for his black humour and for turning photographic norms upside down, Blalock paints his personal picture of the region. Instead of traditional postcard subjects, he puts unusual motifs centre stage by showcasing special regional features and specialities and arranging them in a new context. Although the photographs may at times look tentative and awkward – which is quite intentional – they capture the essence of the St. Moritz way of life and its spirit. In total, the latest edition comprises 67 “posters” that advertise St. Moritz and the project at the same time.

Lucas Blalock (born in 1978 in Asheville, North Carolina) lives and works in Brooklyn, New York, and is considered representative of what is new and innovative in photography. He stages everyday objects, photographs them and then manipulates them digitally. He does not try to hide his interventions but integrates them in his works. Besides his participation in New Visions, the inaugural issue of Triennial for Photography and New Media at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter in Høvikodden, Norway (2020), and the Whitney Biennale 2019 at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, USA (2019), he is a regular guest exhibitor at renowned galleries and held a solo exhibition at the Zurich Galerie Eva Presenhuber in 2023. His works are represented in the collections of the Whitney Museum, MOMA and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, among others.

The “Souvenir” series was launched in 2019 for the first time to show St. Moritz from the perspective of world-famous photographers. Since then, one artist in residence here has been given the opportunity to develop their own, personal perspective of the region every year. The photographers are entirely free to select the subjects and models for the publication and to make the final choice of the image material. Earlier “Souvenir” editions are by Torbjørn Rødland, Roe Etheridge, Colin Dodgson as well as David Sims & Jake Chapman. Souvenir St. Moritz is curated by Gianni Pisano.

The new, 144-page “Souvenir St. Moritz” edition costs CHF 50 and is sold in the Online Shop, at the Tourist Information St. Moritz as well as in selected bookshops in the USA and Japan.
