In winter, Mürren is a skiers’ paradise with a long winter season lasting into May. At 1650m it is the highest resort in the Bernese Oberland where uncrowded slopes extend from the top of the Schilthorn (2970m) to Lauterbrunnen (800m): 51km of pistes within the Jungfrau area’s total of 213km for all levels of skier.
A snowpark, ski-cross, wide-ranging off-piste and touring possibilities, cosy huts, a 3km toboggan run, ice-rink, curling, snowshoeing and winter hiking trails are added winter attractions.
In summer, this lovely car-free village is a magical Alpine escape with an iconic view of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Spectacular hiking trails lead into the wilds of the Upper Lauterbrunnen Valley, whose glaciers and waterfalls inspired Tolkien’s Rivendell.
Attractions include the giddy via ferrata between Mürren and the neighbouring hamlet of Gimmelwald and the cliff-side Thrill Walk at Birg (2677m), the mid-station of the exciting cable car ride to the Schilthorn (2970m). Its celebrated revolving Piz Gloria restaurant (45 minutes per revolution) was the setting for Blofeld’s lair in the 007 film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Restaurant and terrace command a magnificent panorama stretching from Mont Blanc to the Jura. A visit to the Bond-themed Spy World exhibition is a must.
Year round the village offers a variety of activities taking place in the sports centre where a 25-metre pool, al fresco whirlpool, gymnasium, spa and wellness area are features. There are boutique shops, a variety of restaurants and a weekly programme of organised activities ranging from village tours to yoga. Access via Lauterbrunnen (road, rail or air; Berne, Zurich or Geneva airports) is by cable car and cog-wheel railway.
