Mount Bohemia Named One Of USA's Best Ski Hills
Once again, Mount Bohemia has been recognized by USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards as one of the nation’s top downhill ski destinations. A panel of experts partnered with 10Best editors to pick the initial nominees, and the top 10 winners were determined by popular vote. This marks the fourth straight year Mount Bohemia has made the Top 5 of the popular Today’s 10Best list.
“It’s such an honor to have been chosen as the fourth best ski resort in North America,” expressed Mount Bohemia’s President Lonie Glieberman. “We believe that what makes Mount Bohemia so special is our commitment to creating an atmosphere unlike anyplace else. It is important for us to stay true to our roots; the Bohemia lifestyle is all about fun, adventure, and wilderness. We strive to bring this to our customers everyday with ungroomed runs, fresh lake effect powder, and an après ski scene with a Nordic spa pool party twist.”
Mount Bohemia, best known as a destination for extreme skiers and 273 inches of average annual snowfall, is the only Midwestern resort to make the top ten. Stowe Mountain Resort in Vermont was the only other resort east of the Mississippi River to make the list. Opened in 2000, Mount Bohemia’s 620 acres features Michigan’s tallest vertical drop at 900 feet. It also has Michigan’s longest run, Ghost Trail, which is almost 2 miles long. Mount Bohemia has the deepest powder in the Midwest. This hidden secret is a true treasure for backcountry skiers & riders.
The average snowfall in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula is 273 inches. The lake effect snow is dry similar to western resorts and accumulates as powder which is untouched because they do not groom. This makes for a great morning to make the first tracks.
Sections
- Bohemia Mining Company: front side of the mountain features open runs and some glades.
- Bear Den: eastern region of Bohemia featuring the most popular non gladed runs on the mountain.
- Extreme Backcountry: A half mile wide forest with some chutes and small and big cliff drops throughout this area. The extreme back country has the most popular glade runs on the mountain. Skiers take the bus after arriving at the bottom.
- Haunted Valley: a North side glade system which usually has the best snow on the mountain in the spring.
- The Graveyard: Lower section of the Haunted Valley is the best place to go to find powder several days after a storm.
- Outer Limits: Remote backcountry section with long gladed terrain featuring rolling topography. Some of the deepest snowfall hits the outer limits.
- Middle Earth: The far eastern section at Bohemia which is about 2 miles from base area. The Middle earth gets excellent snow and has the longest runs at Bohemia.
- Little Boho: Bohemia’s newest area is in fact a whole other ski hill. Little Boho while smaller than Bohemia provides some of the steepest terrain on the mountain. Customers find little Boho on the back of the parking lot and then do a short hike to the top of Little Boho. When you reach the bottom the bus picks you up.
