Mëter Mans Exhibition –25 Craftswomen from Val Gardena share their stories 1-16 March 2025
25 women from Val Gardena, united by their passion for their craft, spanning all generations, showcase their artworks in a NEW exhibition that reflects the richness and depth of Ladin culture - a unique blend of Germanic, Latin, and Tyrolean influences - combining old and new traditions.
The exhibited works serve as memory boxes, carriers of seemingly small but incredibly valuable stories for the community. Each piece tells the story of its creator, a mosaic of collective history, interwoven in artistic and personal ways.
The exhibition includes monastic needlework, delicate wood carvings and traditional craftsmanship such as the artful decoration of eggs, the iconic Grödner costume with its characteristic gloves, and the craft of the "Gherlanda Spiza" – the crown-like head piece worn by women in their hair.
Rooted in an ancient Ladin tradition, the so-called "jì cul puntl"—visiting someone to lace together (fé zandli) and chat. The Venetian equivalent of "jì cul puntl" was called "fare filò". The term "filò" likely derives from "filare"—spinning—a task that women would undertake together in cozy living rooms or stables during the cold season. These gatherings allowed women to stay warm, spend time together, and pray the rosary while engaging in small handicrafts.
Conversations developed, thus, "jì cul puntl" came to mean chatting, storytelling, preserving, and passing on knowledge, traditions, and stories. These nest like spaces where ideas matured, beautiful crafts were created, an act of strength for a woman, a means of passing on knowledge, actively becoming a part of the culture and history.
