Mammut Supports Tom Belz To Climb Kilimanjaro
Mammut Brand Ambassador Tom Belz lives with one leg and two crutches since he lost one leg because of bone cancer. After the amputation, Tom was repeatedly told what he is able to do and what he certainly can’t do due to his physical impairment. Now, the young man from Germany wants to show what he is capable of: With the support of Mammut the 31-year-old faces the project of his life and aims to climb Kilimanjaro.
Tom Belz contracted bone cancer at the age of eight and, despite lengthy chemotherapy, his left leg had to be amputated. When Tom was twelve years old, he decided to refuse an artificial limb and instead started living a normal life with one leg and two crutches. This August, the 31-year-old teacher from Offenbach am Main challenges himself in a way he has never done before: With support of Mammut and his companions, Tom plans to climb Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain of Africa and one of the Seven Summits.
"By climbing Kilimanjaro, I want to prove that a physical impairment does not necessarily need to be a disability. And it is by no means an excuse. At least, not for me!“
Tom intensively prepared himself for this major challenge. In mid-July, he climbed the 3,600 meter high Äusseres Barrhorn in the Swiss Alps together with a mountain guide from the Mammut Alpine School. After the successfully completed training tour, Tom was full of excitement: “What an amazingly beautiful view, what a feeling, what a great idea brought me up there, what a big effort and what a cool training program for my next project!”
