Lee Canyon Closed Until Further Notice Due To Tropical Storm Hilary

Lee Canyon, a popular ski resort located just 45 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip, has been closed until further notice due to Tropical Storm Hilary.

The storm, which made landfall in Southern California on Saturday, brought heavy rain and high winds to the Las Vegas area. Lee Canyon received 9.8 inches of rain over the weekend, causing flooding and mudslides on the mountain.

The resort said in a statement that it is closed "due to safety concerns."

"We are committed to the safety of our guests and our employees, and we will not reopen until we are confident that the mountain is safe," the statement said.

A message posted to Lee Canyon’s Facebook page  “The U.S. Forest Service has closed the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area, including Lee Canyon, due to concerns over an incoming storm and potential flash flooding. As a result, operations will be suspended on Saturday and Sunday. All guest orders have been canceled and will be notified by email with further details.” 

The U.S. Forest Service, which manages Lee Canyon, has also closed the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area. The closure is in effect until at least Friday, August 25.

The closure of Lee Canyon is a blow to the Las Vegas area, which is home to a number of ski resorts. The resorts are a popular destination for tourists and locals alike, especially during the winter months.

Tropical Storm Hilary is expected to weaken as it moves east into Arizona. However, the storm is still expected to bring heavy rain and high winds to parts of the Southwest.
