Jerome Tanon Announces ’Heroes’, Photo Book And Exhibition Focusing On Female Snowboarders
Jérôme Tanon, a French photographer and filmmaker, is proud to present his new masterpiece ‚HEROES’, a photo project about the unique women in Snowboarding dedicated to their passion for the sport they love. A successful crowdfunding campaign earlier this summer helped to bring ‚HEROES’ to life as large-format hardcover-book, which will be released on Oct 13th, 2020. Additionally, the photo project will go on an exhibition tour with first dates scheduled for this autumn and more to follow in 2021.
The 33 year old photographer has made himself a respected name in Snowboarding photography over the last 12 years. He is a true artist and in love with traditional analogue photography techniques which he has applied to modern snowboard photography. Jérôme is shooting mostly on film, processing and developing the photos in his darkroom. Known for his distinct photographic style, but also well known for his award-winning documentaries ,The Eternal Beauty of Snowboarding’ (2016) and ‚Zabardast’ (2018).
The Photo Project - Jérôme has always had huge respect for all the independent and badass girls out there snowboarding, skateboarding or surfing. Yet during the course of his career, Jérôme barely captured any truly epic shots of girls. This lack of photo works inspired him to follow some of the most talented female riders around the world for two seasons, hoping to capture the culture and progression of women in Snowboarding. Featured is an amazing crew of snowboarders, among them Elena Graglia (ITA), Ylfa Runarsdottir (ISL), Laurie Blouin (CAN), Anna Gasser (AUT), Elena Könz (SUI), Yuka Fujimori (JAP), Silje Norendal (NOR), Zoi Sadowski-Synnott (NZL), Mary-France Roy (CAN), Leanne Pelosi (CAN), Hana Beaman (USA), Desiree Melancon (USA), Robin Van Gyn (CAN) and many more. Using traditional methods, Jérôme shoots with a Pentax 6x7 medium format film camera. He then etched and painted on the negatives before making silver gelatin prints in the darkroom.
HEROES - The Book - The book is self-produced and comes with 288 pages full of Jérôme’s photos accompanied by artworks and stories from female snowboarders and artists from all over the world. The book became a reality thanks to the snowboarding community, which showed its support by contributing to a successful crowdfunding campaign earlier this summer. From October 13th onwards the book will be available globally, in selected Snowboard stores and online via Blue Tomato and Snowboarder Magazine USA for € 45/US$ 50. On the release day Evo in collaboration with Snowboarder Magazine and Salomon Snowboards invites everyone to tune in for an online conference called ‚Meet your Heroes’. This is an opportunity for everyone out there to hear more from the women who were involved in the development process. Meet Mary Walsh, Robin Van Gyn, Desiree Melancon and Nirvana Ortanez as well as Jérôme himself to talk about the current state of women in snowboarding and to find out more about Jérôme’s vision behind the project. Tune in here at 5.30 pm PST (2:30 AM CET) on Oct. 13th: Link
