Funding Notification For The Feasibility Study Of The Kelheim Cable Car Project
Get off the train and into the cable car across the Danube - that is the idea behind the "Smart Urban Connection" project. The district of Kelheim wants to investigate whether and how an urban cable car can improve the connection between the train station in Saal an der Donau and the district town of Kelheim. The Bavarian Ministry of Transport supports this feasibility study with a total of 107,250 euros. Bavaria's Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter handed over the funding decision in Kelheim today. "The study is intended to shed light on whether an urban cable car can be a technically, economically and ecologically sensible addition to local public transport," said Minister Bernreiter. "As a Free State, we are happy to support the expansion and new construction of attractive mobility offers, even if the idea seems unusual at first glance." Kelheim District Administrator Martin Neumeyer: “In a world that is constantly on the move, mobility concepts and our way of using mobility are also changing. As a new form of mobility, a cable car between Kelheim and Saal adD will bring the two places closer together and will make a significant contribution to the mobility mix to better connect Kelheim to the local public transport network.”
With the support of the Free State, a planning basis for an inter-municipal cable car project is being examined for the first time in rural Bavaria. Another special feature of the project is that a connection is to be created across the Danube. In addition, further knowledge is to be gained for possible applications in rural areas that have not yet been examined in detail. With the "Smart Urban Connection" project, the existing local public transport offer in the district town of Kelheim will be supplemented by a direct connection to the train station in Saal an der Donau. This is intended to relieve the main roads and strengthen public transport in the district. The total cost of the feasibility study is around 165,000 euros.
It is important to the Free State to promote and develop innovative and attractive mobility forms and concepts for public transport. Under certain conditions, an urban cable car can represent an environmentally and climate-friendly supplement to public transport and can be implemented relatively quickly.
