Dullest Headline Ever. Falginjochbahn, Kaunertal Receives Award From The Hot-dip Galvanizing Industry Association.
In a truly riveting story the industrial association for hot-dip galvanizing has been awarding the galvanizing prize, endowed with 15,000 euros, for architecture and metal design since 1989 and has been honoring projects that stand out from the mainstream in terms of design, but also in terms of resource efficiency and sustainability. In keeping with the long tradition, outstandingly solved construction tasks were again brought into the public eye at this year's 17th award ceremony.
- 1st prize architecture: Falginjochbahn, Kaunertal Glacier (A)
- Project: Falginjochbahn
- Award winner: Baumschlager Hutter ZT GmbH, Dornbirn (A)
Comment of the jury:
"The Falginjochbahn in the rear Kaunertal replaces two existing tow lifts and leads up to 3,113 meters above sea level, to the highest point of the ski area. With the mountain and valley station, two technoid-looking infrastructure structures were created that focus on materials from cable car construction - hot-dip galvanized steel for the construction and concrete as the "base". The external steel structures of the building make the construction transparent, understandable and tangible. The same applies to the mechanics of the cable car technology of the mountain station consisting of ropes, rollers, guides and supports. It appears aesthetically excessive and merges with the steel structure of the building. Technology and building become one unit. The exposed location and the high alpine conditions also required the use of hot-dip galvanized steel. The high degree of prefabrication of the steel structure made a significant contribution to keeping the construction work low and to an ecologically acceptable level in a time window of six months owed to the climate. The durability of hot-dip galvanizing also creates ecological benefits, as maintenance measures on the steel structure in the sensitive high-alpine nature become obsolete. With the mountain and valley station of the Falginjochbahn, Baumschlager Hutter Partners symbiotically combine the aesthetic, functional and technical strengths of hot-dip galvanized steel and thus create a reduced, iconic-looking architecture of the highest precision that made a lasting impression on the jury. A worthy first prize."
