Doppelmayr Cable Car Connects BUGA Exhibition Parks In Mannheim

From April 14 to October 8, 2023, the Federal Garden Show (BUGA) will take place in Mannheim. The focus is on the current issues of our time: climate, energy, environment and food security. The mobility on the site also underlines the sustainability concept of the BUGA: A cable car from Doppelmayr connects the two exhibition sites Spinelli- and Luisenpark.

"The BUGA is not only a wonderful flower and garden show, but also a very special event that connects and brings people together," explains Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann at the opening of the Federal Garden Show on April 14, 2023 and adds: "The BUGA shows how city and nature can be combined and gives interesting views of the future of our cities.” The BUGA also impressively fulfills this requirement with a cable car as a sustainable means of transport on the site. The 10-seater gondola connects the Spinellipark with the Luisenpark and crosses the urban infrastructure of Mannheim on the two-kilometer route, including the waterway on the Neckar or the train route of the Deutsche Bahn. It gives passengers a whole new view of the city while they are driving.

Mobility for everyone

The Austrian ropeway manufacturer Doppelmayr is responsible for construction and operation during the BUGA. The system is a detachable gondola of the D-Line generation. It is equipped with a total of 64 comfortable OMEGA V cabins, each of which can accommodate 10 people. True to the BUGA motto "That's all of us", the cable car is barrier-free for all passengers, even with wheelchairs or prams. In just under seven minutes, it transports up to 2,800 people per hour in each direction.

Sustainable along the entire length

The function of the cable car is to connect two exhibition areas of the BUGA for the visitors in terms of transport. It only takes up minimal floor space. The cable car is almost emission-free, floats silently through the air on a new level and is powered by green electricity. This makes the cable car the most ecological and resident-friendly form of mobility. Another sustainability aspect concerns the reuse of the cable car system. Some components, such as station components or cabins, were already in use at the Dutch flower exhibition Floriade in Almere in 2022. Even after the BUGA 23, the system will continue to be used at a new location. Discussions are already being held with possible areas.

Natural space wherever possible

The cable car stations are another example of sustainable architecture in an urban context. The roofs of the BUGA cable car are green and thus fit perfectly into the green landscape of the exhibition with numerous advantages: The greenery has a cooling effect, binds fine dust, absorbs ambient noise and provides new biodiversity areas. Green roofs also play an important role in rain retention. They not only relieve the drainage systems, but also ensure better climatic conditions.

The BUGA experience

Michael Schnellbach, Managing Director of BUGA 23 explains: "With BUGA 23 we offer our visitors an exciting mixture of flowers, innovative exhibition contributions on sustainability and a cultural festival with over 6,000 events." The cable car is also used as an event location, as a space for art and culture. Because it is not just a means of transport, but an integral part of the BUGA experience.
