Dominik Paris Takes Home Win In Bormio DH
The traditional Stelvio downhill in Bormio is back on the World Cup Tour after four years in Santa Caterina. The long and challenging course was covered with approximately 20 centimeters of fresh snow overnight, which caused a delay of 45 minutes, but the course crew worked hard to clean it and prepare a fair track for the top athletes.
Italian Dominik Paris was able to clinch a downhill win in front of a home crowd in Bormio, as he did already in 2012. After a challenging start in the season, he stepped up his game to find the top of the podium again and celebrate his 8th downhill win in career.
Defending champion Aksel Lund Svindal, who’s the last athlete to have won on the Stelvio, brought down one of his impressive strong runs and finished only +0.04 behind the winner of the day. A 73th podium for the Norwegain is also the 10th out of his last 12 participations in a downhill, which showcases his fantastic shape despite many serious injuries.
Another Norwegian rounds up the podium; it’s Kjetil Jansrud. The downhill standings runner-up from last season was already second in the previous downhill in Val Gardena / Gröden and is eager for more solid performances like this.
Manuel Osborne-Paradis (Vancouver, B.C.) is back in the top ten for the first time this season finishing the Bormio, ITA downhill in tenth-place. In a time of 1:58.07, Osborne-Paradis was +1.12 off the leader time. Osborne-Paradis kicked out of the gate wearing bib number six this morning taking to the Stelvio track, famous for its dark, bumpy turns, big air and physical challenge.
Clocking in at a high speed of 128km/hr, Osborne-Paradis skied the bottom section of the track well, making up time in the last split.
Canadian teammates Broderick Thompson (Whistler, B.C.) and Ben Thomsen (Invermere, B.C.) also raced today. Thompson, who started with bib number 35 and had a great start to the season with two top 30 results, missed out on capturing points today, finishing 42nd. Thomsen finished 51st.
Dominik Paris took the win in front of a home crowd, with a time of 1:56.95. The Attacking Vikings filled in the rest of the podium with Aksel Lund Svindal in second-place (+0.04) and Kjetil Jansrud taking third-place (+0.17).
Today, an alpine combined will be held on the Stelvio in Bormio, with a first run downhill run starting at 11.30 and a second run in slalom at 15.00.
