Dolomiti Superski: Reforestation Project - 600 Trees Planted
the Dolomiti Superski "Plant a Tree" reforestation project on the southwest slope of Plan de Corones came to an end. About twenty mountain rescuers from the CNSAS Marebbe and other volunteers planted over 600 small larch, pine and fir trees at an altitude of 2,100 m.
The "Plant a Tree" reforestation project was born out of the "Dolomiti Superski rewards your passion" competition, which includes a series of predefined skiing activities that unlock a certain number of badges to reach one of the three levels of the competition. One of these badges was the "Plant a Tree" eco-badge - the only one that could be unlocked by paying 5 euros to become the sponsor of a small larch, pine or fir tree. Dolomiti Superski, as the initiator of the campaign, has committed to doubling the proceeds from the sale of the eco-badge.
In close collaboration with the Brunico Forestry Inspectorate (BZ) and with the CNSAS Marebbe Volunteer Mountain Rescue Service for the operational side, on Saturday 1 June the planting of seedlings took place on the south-western slope of Plan de Corones, which was severely damaged by Storm Vaia at the end of October 2018. "Our goal was to implement an eco-sustainable project in our area, where in 2018 Storm Vaia and the early autumn snowfall the following year had caused major forest damage. The south-western slope of Plan de Corones seemed to us a good choice because the damage is directly visible from the ski slopes and those who have joined the project will be able to follow the developments over time while skiing," says Marco Pappalardo, Marketing Director of Dolomiti Superski, who is leading the project.
Thanks to the commitment of about twenty mountain rescuers from the CNSAS Marebbe and other volunteers, including some Dolomiti Superski employees, over 600 larches, pines and firs supplied by the nurseries of the Forestry Service of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano were planted on the morning of 1 June. It is hoped that as many seedlings as possible will take root so that the wound left by Vaia can heal in a few years. "The 'Plant a Tree' reforestation project has given us great joy and satisfaction. Firstly because so many ski enthusiasts have joined the initiative, demonstrating their sensitivity to our area. Secondly because we can support one of the many volunteer organizations in our area that provide an extremely valuable service to the mountains and the people who go to the mountains, both in winter and summer. Thirdly, because the fruits of this action will one day be visible to all skiers, regardless of whether they participated in the initiative or not," summarizes Marco Pappalardo.
With a view to the coming winter season, given the success of the “premiere”, Dolomiti Superski is also examining new sustainability projects in other areas of the Dolomites.
