Crested Butte’s Extreme Terrain Opens for the Season

The moment many Crested Butte locals and guests have been waiting for occurred on Wednesday, February 21, when Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) opened the first extreme terrain of the winter season. Expert skiers and riders accessed the steep terrain of Teocalli Bowl, Headwall, Big Chute and Paradise Cliffs, all via the High Lift.

CBMR is renowned for the 542 acres of inbounds Extreme Limits Terrain that provide expert skiers and riders with some of the best runs in the country.

“The Crested Butte Ski Patrol is psyched to be able to open up some of the extreme terrain that Crested Butte is renowned for,” exclaims CBMR Director of Ski Patrol, Bill Dowell. “With the excitement of this opening, we cannot stress enough the importance of being reasonably cautious and aware of the conditions.”

With nearly three feet of snow falling in the past two weeks and up to a foot in the forecast through Sunday, Ski Patrol was able to confidently and safely open up the terrain. Meanwhile, 97% of CBMR’s additional inbounds terrain is open with excellent conditions for all ability levels.

For skiers and riders interested in exploring CBMR’s Extreme Limits Terrain, the resort is offering the CB Steep Guides program, which helps adventure-minded guests make the jump to extreme skiing and riding. Each daily program includes evaluation and light education.
