Comments Sought About Proposed Red River Ski Area Chairlift Replacement

Carson National Forest planners are preparing to review a proposal from Red River Ski Area. Ski area managers are seeking to replace the fixed-grip double Copper Chair with a fixed-grip triple lift. As part of the process, planners are seeking scoping comments from the public and interested parties.

Red River Ski Area’s purpose and need for the project is to enhance visitor experience and operational efficiency by replacing the existing lift, which was installed in 1993 and has since been experiencing frequent maintenance issues. The proposed lift would serve both winter and summer activities, improving the multi-seasonal recreational offerings for guests to recreate on national forest lands within the ski area boundary. The upgrade is needed to modernize and improve consistency with the existing lift network at the ski area.

Specific written comments concerning the proposed action will be accepted beginning today. Comments will be most helpful if received by December 31, 2023. Scoping comments will assist planners in refining the proposed action and identifying resources to be included in the analysis.

Written comments must be submitted via mail, email or in person to James Duran, Forest Supervisor, c/o Paul Schilke, Winter Sports Coordinator P.O. Box 110 Questa, NM 87556. Comments by email, including attachments, can be submitted to paul.schilke@usda.gov.
