Bakuriani 2023: FIS President Eliasch Hails successful World Championships
The so-called smaller ski nations are on the rise. First we saw a historic silver medal won by Greek athlete Alexandros Ginnis at the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Courchevel/Méribel. Then, weeks later, Georgia showed its best side at its premier FIS Freestyle Skiing, Freeski and Snowboard World Championships in Bakuriani.
Georgia pulled out the stops for its first ever World Championships, and it showed over two weeks of stunning snow sports and warm hospitality. Though the organising committee and the Georgian Ski Federation faced a challenging preparation phase due to the pandemic – as well as difficult weather conditions – they put on a great World Championships and proved the nation a worthy host.
During a visit to Bakuriani, FIS President Johan Eliasch was able to see the competition sites and the dedication of all involved. "Bakuriani 2023 have done a tremendous job. This event has not only showcased that skiing and snowboarding are highly valued in Georgia – it has also given us a glimpse of the incredible amount of potential here for future events."
In meetings with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili and President Salome Zurabishvili, Eliasch discussed various ways this potential might be exploited, including the possibility of a Georgian FIS Academy to further promote talent in the country.
"Georgia has a great love for our sport and excellent conditions to develop skiing and snowboarding," said Eliasch. "In close exchange with the Georgian Ski Federation, FIS is committed to ensuring that Bakuriani 2023 will leave a lasting legacy – and we are on the right track."
