Avalanche Damages Bellayre Mountain's Lodge
On Christmas morning, an avalanche damaged a lodge at the Belleayre Mountain Ski Center in Ulster County, New York. The resort said the snow slide happened Friday morning and was a caused by heavy rainfall, high amounts of snow on the ground, and warm temperatures. Bellayre is not in typical avalanche country.
The resort has posted an update on its website saying “This morning, supersaturated snow from the Yahoo trail let loose and slid into the Overlook Lodge.”
The resort has now reopened. In a statment it said:
Dear Belleayre Friends and Family,
After a tremendous amount of rain and high winds, which has severely impacted our ability to operate in the current environment, The Christmas storm has dumped over 6.5 inches of rain on Belleayre.
This morning, supersaturated snow from the Yahoo trail let loose and slid into the Overlook Lodge. The lodge sustained significant damage, with windows and doors broken. No injuries have been reported.
