Austria: More than 39 million overnight stays in the first half of the 2023 summer season. This is the highest value since 1980

According to preliminary results from Statistics Austria, 39.50 million overnight stays in Austrian accommodation establishments were reported for the first half of the 2023 summer tourist season (May to July). The result was 6.3% above the level of the previous year and 1.7% above the pre-corona value for the period May to July 2019.

"In the first half of this year's summer season, vacations in Austria were in greater demand than ever before: At 39.50 million, overnight stays in Austrian accommodation establishments in the period from May to July 2023 were just below the corresponding maximum value of 40.00 in 1980 million was reached. Around 70% of overnight stays are due to guests from abroad,” says Tobias Thomas, Director General of Statistics Austria.

Previous summer season 2023 above pre-crisis level 2019

  • In the 2023 summer season to date (May to July), 39.50 million overnight stays were reported, 6.3% more than in the same period of the previous year (37.16 million). Foreign guests contributed 27.54 million (+10.5%) to the positive interim result. After overnight stays by guests from Germany had reached the highest value ever recorded for this period at 12.24 million in the same period of the previous year, they fell to 11.96 million in the first half of the summer season this year (−2.2% ). The number of overnight stays in the summer season so far is well above the level of the same period before Corona (May to July 2019: 38.83 million), both in terms of overnight stays by guests from abroad (May to July 2019: 27.22 million) and from within Germany (May to July 2019: 11.61 million).
  • In the entire 2022 summer season (May to October), 77.89 million overnight stays were reported, 1.4% fewer than in summer 2019, when the previous high of 78.97 million was recorded. Overnight stays by guests from Austria reached 24.32 million in summer 2022, 53.57 million overnight stays in Austrian accommodation establishments were attributable to guests from abroad.

18.7 million overnight stays in July 2023

After August, July is the second most important summer month for tourism, accounting for around a quarter of all overnight stays in the summer season. In July 2023, overnight stays by foreign guests increased by 6.9% compared to July 2022 to 13.83 million, while those by domestic guests fell by 2.8% to 4.87 million. Overall, overnight stays in July grew by 4.2% to 18.7 million. The number of guest arrivals in Austrian accommodation establishments rose to 5.56 million (+5.0%) compared to the same month last year.

An analysis by country of origin shows that overnight stays by guests from Germany increased by 4.7% in July 2023. Other countries of origin such as Switzerland and Liechtenstein (+7.0%) or the Czech Republic (+15.0%) also showed increases . On the other hand, guests from the Netherlands, the second largest originating market, stayed 1.5% less often in Austria than in July of the previous year.

Strong increase in overnight stays from January to July 2023

In the calendar year 2023 to date (January to July), 93.15 million overnight stays were registered, 12.67 million more (+15.7%) than in the same period of the previous year. The number of overnight stays was therefore only 2.1% below the level of 2019, when 93.15 million overnight stays were registered.
