Andorran Alpine Skier Iria Medina Gironès Wins 27th International Matteo Baumgarten Award

Iria Medina Gironès, a rising alpine skier from Andorra, has been named the recipient of the 27th International Matteo Baumgarten Award. The prestigious award ceremony, traditionally held in Bormio, Italy, took place on the 7th April 2024.

Iria, who excels in academics as well as skiing, is pursuing a degree in Physiotherapy at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC Barcelona). The Baumgarten family, Giacomo and Paola, established the award to honor their son Matteo, a promising skier who tragically passed away. They specifically recognize young athletes who, like Matteo, demonstrate dedication to both education and their sport.

The Baumgartens believe prioritizing studies is important for young athletes. They see the award as a way to keep Matteo's memory alive, not just as a talented skier, but also as a well-rounded individual who valued education.

By winning the Baumgarten Award, Iria Medina Gironès joins a prestigious list of past recipients, including current alpine skiing star Marco Odermatt.

FIS and the Baumgarten family extend their congratulations to Iria Medina Gironès and express their gratitude to all the nominees and National Ski Associations who participated in this year's selection process.
