Aletsch Bahnen: Moosfluh Geological Footbridge Opens
Aletsch Bahnen AG has inaugurated the Moosfluh geological footbridge at the Gletscherbahn Moosfluh mountain station.
Those responsible present what motivated them to create this themed circular route above the largest glacier in the Alps.
The Great Aletsch Glacier, the largest glacier in the Alps, is retreating rapidly under the influence of climate change. This glacier melt had a major impact on the Moosfluh ridge. The natural support of the ice was missing, the area above the glacier lost its footing. In the fall of 2016, the first cracks formed. These geological movements calmed down and stabilized quickly. The Moosfluh area is under constant and very precise observation. This ensures safety for the mountain and the train.
The following reasons motivated the Aletsch Bahnen to build the Moosfluh geology bridge:
On the one hand, they want to sensitize the guests to the uniqueness of the glacier landscape, the UNESCO World Heritage Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch and climate change, and on the other hand, they want to convey information about the dynamic geological changes on the Moosfluh to the guests in an informative and stimulating way. Guests can now access the sensitive area safely.
