Israel's Mount Hermon To Re Open But No Skiing Until Next Season

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have announced the completion of security preparations for the reopening of the Mount Hermon ski resort, located in the northern Golan Heights near the borders with Lebanon and Syria. This marks a significant milestone after the resort's prolonged closure due to security concerns.

The site was initially shut down in October 2023, following the escalation of hostilities in the region, including missile and drone attacks by Hezbollah. Over the past months, the IDF has conducted extensive operational assessments and defense activities in collaboration with civilian and security entities to ensure the safety of visitors.

While skiing activities remain unavailable due to damage sustained by the ski lifts during the conflict, the resort will welcome visitors for other snow-related activities and scenic experiences. The IDF has assured that troops will be deployed in the area to maintain a high level of security.

Mount Hermon, a popular winter destination, attracted approximately 400,000 visitors during the 2022-2023 season. The reopening is expected to provide a much-needed boost to local tourism and offer a sense of normalcy to the region.

This development underscores the IDF's commitment to balancing security measures with the resumption of civilian life in the area. Visitors from across the country are encouraged to enjoy the unique attractions of Mount Hermon while adhering to safety guidelines.

“Over the past few months, forces have conducted ongoing situation assessments, alongside defense activities in cooperation with security and civilian elements, in order to maintain a high level of readiness while dealing with daily challenges in the field,” the army added.

“We maintain a high level of preparedness both in terms of security and, of course, we are ready, waiting, and excited for your arrival here at the site,” Lt. Col. G., the deputy commander of the IDF’s 810th “Mountain” Brigade, said in the statement.

Israel’s only ski resort will reopen to the public on Tuesday after being shuttered for 16 months due to the war against Hezbollah in Lebanon, although skiing will not be possible until next year due to damage.

The snow-peaked compound on the southeastern slopes of Mount Hermon will reopen its doors by reservation only with limited access to a cable car, sleds and a snow sledding area for children. Repairs to the ski lifts damaged by Hezbollah fire at the popular tourism site are expected to be carried out over the summer.
