Ski Industry Climate Summit 2024—One Of Four Conferences At ISPO Munich

Under the motto “From Commitment to Action”, the Ski Industry Climate Summit on 2 and 3 December at ISPO Munich will once again bring together the big players in the world of skiing and snowboarding. The event, which is organised and hosted by ATOMIC in collaboration with Protect Our Winters (POW), the Winter Sports Sustainability Network (WSN) and ISPO Munich, brings together the most important brands, manufacturers, retailers, associations and NGOs, all united to forge innovative ideas for more climate protection and to jointly shape the future of winter sports.

Hardly any other sport is as directly impacted by the effects of climate change as the ski and snowboard industry. Melting glaciers, progressively shorter winter sports seasons and the ever-increasing use of artificial snow are changing the conditions for the entire industry—from winter sports resorts to manufacturers. The first Ski Industry Climate Summit was held in Salzburg last year to provide impetus for more climate protection in the industry.

“This kick-off showed that the ski industry is ready to initiate real change. Someone has to take the first step, and it’s great that ATOMIC has decided to take on this role. As a global platform for the sports industry, we are delighted to be part of this movement and to be able to support the ski industry at ISPO Munich 2024. ATOMIC is taking advantage of the many opportunities offered by ISPO Munich to present not only its products but also itself as a pioneer in sustainability,” explains Tobias Gröber, Director ISPO Group, Messe München GmbH.

EXTENSIVE CONFERENCE PROGRAMME

The Ski Industry Climate Summit is one of four conferences taking place alongside ISPO Munich. ISPO and the ESB Marketing Network are opening a new chapter with SPORT MARKE MEDIEN. Influential brands, pioneering sports organisations and leading media experts will come together on 2 and 3 December 2024 to define the future of sport. As an independent and cross-sport platform, the German Trainers’ Summit on 4 December 2024 offers a unique opportunity for coaches in top-class sport to expand their expertise and to network. Sports Tech Nation, one of Europe’s most important sports tech conferences, will also take place on 4 December 2024, completing ISPO Munich’s expanded conference programme as a platform for decision-makers from the worlds of sport and technology.

SECOND EDITION OF THE CLIMATE SUMMIT AS PART OF ISPO MUNICH 2024

The two-day event at the ICM (International Congress Centre Munich) will focus on the question of how the measures agreed by the winter sports industry in the WSN Climate Pact 2023, which brands must implement to reduce their environmental impact and align themselves with climate science, can be translated into measurable results. With a particular focus on collaboration across the industry, the summit will address the urgent challenges facing winter sports—from sustainable sourcing to clean energy.

“It is important to us to continue the conversation about climate protection in the ski industry,” says Wolfgang Mayrhofer, President of ATOMIC. “Our brand has its roots in the Austrian Alps, so we see the effects of climate change on our industry at first hand. The Ski Industry Climate Summit serves as a platform where we not only discuss challenges, but also work together on solutions. Only in this way can we transform winter sports into a model for sustainability.”

Together with external speakers and experts, the four most important interest groups in the ski industry—brands, suppliers, retailers and organisations—will discuss the following topics:

  • Legislation and compliance: What impact will new EU regulations, such as the European Green Deal and new sustainability guidelines, have on the industry?
  • Supply chain: How can we source materials with less environmental impact and improve the sharing of sustainability data?
  • Circular economy: What innovations are there in recycling and circular product design?
  • Clean energy procurement: What are the new insights into procuring renewable energy for operations and production?
  • Impact measurement: How can the carbon footprint of companies be measured and product life cycles tracked?

“The framework is now clearly defined and the goals are clear. Now is the time to turn words into actions and to work together to advance circular systems, material standards, large-scale industrial transformations and other key initiatives,” says Jonas Schneider, Executive Director of Protect Our Winters (POW). “Our mutual goal is to change the image of skiing and snowboarding from a climate sinner to a climate saver.”
