New Dates And Locations For Henry’s Avalanche Talk: The Ortovox Off-Piste Awareness Tour 2024
The 2024 ORTOVOX Off-Piste Awareness Tour launches in association with Ellis Brigham and The Ski Club of Great Britain, including a number of evening talks with HAT (Henry’s Avalanche Talk) founder, Henry Schniewind, a series of online webinars and practical outdoor avalanche transceiver training sessions.
Henry’s Avalanche Talk (HAT) provides training and essential information for skiers who want to go off-piste, but are held back by fear of the unknown. HAT is known for helping ordinary skiers have an extraordinary experience off-piste and touring.
Henry’s Avalanche Talk has been helping to educate off-piste skiers and snowboarders for over 30 years and has grown into a team of off-piste professionals, often referred to as HAT. Talks and courses have been delivered to tens of thousands of people. Henry and the HAT team have presented at international snow science conferences and published many papers and articles, often in the British press.
Training is available in the UK, Val d’Isère and online.
The talks travel to London, Manchester and Glasgow with an additional new talk at The Snow Centre, Hemel Hempstead, added to the programme. Henry is also speaking at this year’s Kendal Mountain Festival (November 21-24). The transceiver training takes place on Wimbledon Common, Sandbanks in Poole and Sale Water Park, Manchester.

Henry Schniewind said: “We don’t know what this winter has in store for us. Last season, because of a very stable snow pack in most of the Alps, we saw a drop in avalanche accidents, but I think that’s also down to an increase in awareness, training and equipment that continues to evolve. Our main goal continues to be the prevention of incidents and we put a huge emphasis on providing the means for applying the knowledge that many people have – so they can reduce the number of simple errors. Most accidents are triggered by people who had the basic training needed to avoid the danger, but they just didn’t apply it. If you don’t apply the knowledge, it doesn’t matter how much you know. It’s the same in other ‘high consequence, low feedback' risk contexts, such as aviation. In aviation they have made flying ‘acceptably safe’ because of the work on reducing the impact of the errors that even the best trained professionals make all the time. As Nobel Prize winner Daniel Kahneman has shown: we think the same no matter where we are or what we are doing. That’s why the HAT approach has saved lives, because it’s not just education. It’s also all about the application of that training and the tools we provide to enable skiers and snowboarders to use it and make off-piste and ski touring ‘acceptably safe’”
