Filzmoos Promotes Advent Season Opportunities

If you are longing for a peaceful Advent and a little break in the mountains in these turbulent times, Filzmoos is the right place for you. The mountain village in the heart of SalzburgerLand takes you into an enchanting winter world where hecticness and pre-Christmas stress have no place. In the protected valley, nestled between the majestic Bischofsmütze and the mighty Dachstein, you can enjoy the days before and around Christmas with all your senses. Far away from kitsch and commerce, the Christmas idyll has remained, even after 30 years, what its inventor Wasti Schörghofer wanted to offer his guests on the Unterhofalm: a real, original Advent walk on snow-covered alpine meadows at the foot of the majestic Bischofsmütze. The “Filzmoos Christmas idyll” on the Hofalmen at around 1,300 meters above sea level is one of the most unusual and original Advent experiences in the Salzburg mountains.

Christmas idyll on the Hofalmen in Filzmoos

As the Hofalmen at the end of the Filzmoos valley are closed to private traffic in winter, they can only be reached by bus taxi or, very romantically, by horse-drawn sleigh. Hikers or snowshoe hikers need about an hour from the car park at the toll booth on the cleared winter hiking trail or through the snow-covered forest. Once they have reached their destination, a dreamy winter landscape awaits visitors at the foot of the imposing Bischofsmütze. Torches show the way across the snow-covered alpine pasture from the Oberhofalm and the Unterhofalm to the Almsee. Along the path there is a nativity scene with life-size figures and a 20-meter-long and two-meter-high silhouette, which shows the Holy Family, the shepherds and the Three Kings in atmospheric lighting. Visitors can warm themselves up with mulled wine, punch or tea at open fires, while brass players and singing groups fill the winter silence with festive sounds. People also like to linger in the small hut by the side of the path to listen to the storyteller's Advent and Christmas stories. The traditional Filzmoos Perchten, who suddenly appear from the forest, provide moments of surprise.

Good, winter-proof footwear is recommended for visiting the Christmas idyll. The Filzmoos Christmas idyll is open from November 29th to December 27th on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and on the Christmas holidays December 25th and 26th, 2024, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Admission: Adults 7 euros, free for holders of the Filzmoos Winter Card, children free

Mountain Village Advent on the village square in Filzmoos

The scent of incense, vanilla crescents and mulled wine mixes with the sounds of brass bands and horse-drawn sleigh bells during the four Advent weekends at the Mountain Village Advent on the village square in Filzmoos. Locals and guests meet on the village square to get in the mood for Christmas together. The festively decorated stalls offer regional arts and crafts, farm handicrafts, homemade Christmas bakery products, traditional Christmas tree decorations and regional specialties. It is not far from the village square to the pilgrimage church. The late Gothic miraculous image of the "Filzmooser Kindl" in the parish and pilgrimage church is one of the few remaining pilgrimage sites for the baby Jesus. And the many pre-Christmas music and traditional events in the Filzmoos restaurants and farmhouses are just a few steps away from the village square.

Dates: The village advent is open on all four Advent weekends from Friday to Sunday, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
