Winter Season 23/24 Overall Positive For Leukerbad
The Leukerbad destination can look back on a very good 2023/24 winter season. A record result was achieved with the torrent tracks. Despite restrictions due to the renovation of the facilities, My Leukerbad AG recorded a good result for thermal bath admissions to the Leukerbad Therme, with the new bathing experience meeting with great response from guests. Only in overnight stays was there a slight decline of -2.8%.
Another record year for the mountain railways
In the 2023/24 winter season, the Torrent lifts achieved top results with excellent snow and weather conditions. The number of visitors rose to almost 164,000 first-time visitors, surpassing the previous year's record by +3%. Sales even improved by +9%. The good result can be explained by the destination's new winter offers, the excellent snow and weather conditions and a renewed increase in Magic Pass customers.
«The continuous investments in product development are having an impact. With the new Funslope & Family Park we were able to expand our offering for more mountain action for young and old. The combination of winter sports and wellness in the destination also creates a unique experience,” says Urs Zurbriggen, CEO of My Leukerbad AG.
Successful reopening of the Leukerbad Therme
The Leukerbad Therme was also able to record a good result this winter. Due to modernization work on the facilities, the thermal spa was closed for four weeks in November and December and did not start the winter season until mid-December. The admission numbers from the previous winter are not quite reached due to the closure (-5% admissions), but are still excellent in a multi-year comparison. Excluding the closing period, a small increase in admissions was even achieved.
Since reopening in December, the renovated indoor pool, the improved wellness experience and especially the new pool bar have met with great response from guests.
«With the renovation of the Leukerbad Therme, we were able to implement a remarkable modernization project in the winter. We are very pleased that the new wellness offers and especially the new pool bar are generating great enthusiasm among the guests. We will continue to invest consistently in the development and expansion of the offering - the natural thermal water is a core part of our destination," says Roland Zegg, Chairman of the Board of My Leukerbad AG.
Slight decline in overnight stays
In terms of overnight stays, the Leukerbad destination recorded a slight decline of -2.8% compared to winter 22/23. This means that the above-average growth compared to the benchmark has stagnated for the first time in the last five years, but the 5-year average is still +12.2%.
Blick Winter Awards 2024
At this year's Blick Winter Awards, 73 ski areas were up for election in six categories. The awards were presented in public voting by more than 62,000 Blick readers. The destination Leukerbad was named the second best destination in Switzerland in the “Leisure & Fun” category.
«We are extremely pleased that we were able to achieve a podium finish in this category. It is confirmation of the diverse leisure activities on offer in the destination as well as the positive development of the offerings,” says CEO Zurbriggen.
Expansion of the summer offering
Despite the good winter result, the destination is aware of the challenges of climate change. As the core of the guest experience, nature is at the center of everything the Leukerbad destination has to offer. In order to preserve and protect them, Leukerbad is making its tourist offerings as sustainable as possible and is involved in various initiatives.
“After several years with little snow, the good snow conditions this winter show once again how unpredictable the conditions have become due to climate change. In the Leukerbad destination, we are therefore increasingly committed to expanding the summer and autumn offerings. As a year-round destination, we can offer our guests exceptional experiences in all seasons,” says Roland Zegg.
Various projects will be launched in the 2024 summer season, including the new Torrentalp – Bottles bike trail and the new Thermi adventure trail on Torrent.
In addition, the summer offering will be strengthened with numerous events. Highlights include the second edition of the Wellness & Yoga Festival WEYO, the mountain bike racing series Swiss Enduro and the ultra-trail run Wildstrubel of the UTMB World Series. A special highlight awaits guests on July 20, 2024: as part of the “Summer Acts” concert series, the popular Swiss band “Stubete Gäng” will give a concert in Leukerbad.
