Garaventa AG: Funicular On The “Sugar Loaf” In Lugano Modernized
The well-known Monte San Salvatore in Lugano underwent a significant change: Garaventa modernized the traditional single-track funicular that had existed for over a century. In addition to renewing the controls, the conversion also included replacing the vehicles, which now offer a better panoramic view.
The funicular on Monte San Salvatore has a long tradition: it was put into operation in March 1890. The cable car has always enjoyed great popularity and is used by around 170,000 passengers every year.
Unique route
The technology of the railway differs from other funicular railways. It is divided into two sections, on each of which only one vehicle operates. The drive, which moves the cars in opposite directions, is installed in the Pazzallo middle station and requires both sections of the route to be identical in length. While the lower section runs straight from Paradiso to the mountain, the upper section takes a slightly S-shaped course and has a significantly greater inclination of up to 61 percent.
Innovative
In addition to the control technology, including a new engine and brake hydraulics, the comprehensive modernization also included the complete renovation of the two vehicles. The funicular cabins manufactured by CWA in Olten differ in their construction due to the varying inclinations of the sections. Both vehicles touch down on the route of the first section. To transfer a vehicle from the first to the second section, it was necessary to separate the car body and chassis in the middle station and then put them back together again. As part of the modernization work, the pull rope was also replaced.
