Alpine Canada Issues Statement On Federal Budget 2024

Alpine Canada Alpin (ACA) welcomes yesterday’s announcement of new federal funding for Canadian athletes allocated in Budget 2024. This vital increase is a positive step forward, helping athletes to better manage the significant costs of training, while acknowledging the contributions of athletes within and beyond the sport system.

ACA recognizes the federal government’s short-term, two-year investments of $16 million for the Sport Support Program, $10.6 million for the Future of Sport in Canada Commission, and $15 million to support community sport programming.

However, the absence of additional core funding for National Sport Organizations (NSOs) is a significant oversight that does not address the $125MM deficit, the cost of which will ultimately have to be borne by participants. Without enhanced NSO support, the infrastructure necessary to nurture and sustain the sport system in Canada remains underfunded. Since the last funding increase in 2005, the growing needs and unique demands of sport have only intensified.

ACA will continue to work with and to support the Canadian Olympic Committee and the Canadian Paralympic Committee to engage with the federal government and advocate for these needed investments to ensure that Canadians can rely on a properly resourced sport system.
