Continued Public Access To Braunwald Thanks To Doppelmayr Garaventa Work On Funicular
The Linthal – Braunwald funicular is very important for the region as the only means of public transport. In late 2023, Garaventa extensively revised the railway - it ensures availability until 2035 and barrier-free access.
The Linthal-Braunwald funicular has been in operation since 1907 and is the only access by public transport for Braunwald. The railway's operations were completely interrupted during the two-week upgrade. Due to the only public development in the area, the requirement for the shortest possible interruption to operations was high. Thanks to precise preparation and a well-rehearsed team, the facility was able to begin public operation on time. During the interruption, the connection to Braunwald was ensured by helicopter flights.
More than standard technical solutions
Barrier-free access is now made possible by a passenger elevator in the valley station and redesigned vehicle compartments. The top compartment was rebuilt so that the floor is no longer stepped. A movable transition ramp for boarding will ensure that the gap between the platform and the train can be easily overcome. Garaventa also replaced all of the electrical equipment during the overhaul and renewal. In addition, a new drive was installed with a gearbox and clutches from Flender GmbH, which are known for their high level of safety and reliability. A new engine room was built in the mountain station. All the material and the new drive were transported up by funicular and on a caterpillar platform. Two steel bridges were also replaced on the route.
