Titlis Project Relies On Schindler Products
Schindler is installing 8 elevators and 7 escalators for the new observation tower and the mountain station on the Titlis. Schindler's experienced project and installation teams are looking forward to the challenge on the mountaintop.
The Titlis project is a construction project of superlatives. By 2028, a new railway line, a new observation tower and a new mountain station will be built in stages at an altitude of 3,000 meters. The internationally renowned architects Herzog & de Meuron have redesigned the mountain station and the iconic tower. World-class architecture is being built on Mount Titlis for future generations. And not only that: The Titlis project massively improves the ecological sustainability of the infrastructure and creates new opportunities for restaurants, hotels and events.
Schindler is also there. The central Swiss company is equipping the mountain station and the observation tower with 8 elevators and 7 escalators. «We are very pleased that we have been awarded the contract for this prestigious project on our doorstep. The work on the Titlis is a great challenge in which we can demonstrate our extensive experience with sustainable solutions in the most demanding alpine environment," says René Kunz, Head of New Systems Business at Schindler Switzerland.
Schindler's experience at dizzy heights
«We paid great attention to involving local and regional companies from Central Switzerland in the project. We chose Schindler for escalators and elevators. The experience, the long-standing collaboration and the offer convinced us,” says Norbert Patt, CEO of Titlis Bergbahnen. Schindler's expertise in other projects on the mountain also helped. Just last year, the Schindler escalator team installed four escalators for the Testa Grigia mountain station near Zermatt at almost 3,500 meters above sea level. «The experience of our employees in such demanding projects is a decisive factor. There is no room for error on the mountain,” says Schindler project manager Jonas Wyrsch. The work on the Titlis is significantly more strenuous for the employees due to the weather and the altitude. Everything also has to be right when it comes to logistics. Missing elevator parts or tools are not quickly available on the mountaintop. “The planning here has to be perfect and every step has to be perfect,” explains Jonas Wyrsch.
Great improvement in environmental sustainability
Construction work on the Titlis began in spring 2023. “Setting up, organizing and operating a construction site at this height is a challenge. But we are also on schedule thanks to the long period of good weather in autumn,” says Norbert Patt. The construction project is a promise for the future. «The next generations should also be able to experience the Titlis in its beauty and uniqueness. That's why the Titlis project not only brings with it an architectural and aesthetic upgrade of the infrastructure, but also massive improvements in ecological sustainability," emphasizes Norbert Patt. The heat and energy requirements as well as the CO2 emissions of the new buildings are significantly reduced. Nothing stands in the way of new summit experiences on the Titlis in the future.
